Roborace is still pursuing its driverless race-car dream
Clearly, Roborace doesn't believe in bad luck. Last week, on Friday the 13th, the company chose to run its self-driving Robocar in front of a feverish crowd at England's Goodwood Festival of Speed. A Google service has gone down โ and taken many of the largest parts of the internet down with it. Snapchat, Spotify, Discord and other major web services ran into problems because of an issue at the web giant. While Google's own websites and apps appeared to be working, the company also provides a range of service to third-parties. It appeared to be an issue with one of those technical tools that is causing the issues. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.

Artificial Intelligence Helps Designers Create Virtual Textures
Researchers have created a new tool that could aid designers for video games, virtual reality and animation in making more realistic virtual textures. An international team of computer scientists is using an artificial intelligence-based technique called generative adversarial networks (GAN) to train a network to learn to expand small textures into larger ones that still resemble the original sample. "Our approach successfully deals with non-stationary textures without any high level or semantic description of the large-scale structure," Yang Zhou, lead author of the work and an assistant professor at Shenzhen University and Huazhong University of Science & Technology, said in a statement. "It can cope with very challenging textures, which, to our knowledge, no other existing method can handle. The results are realistic designs produced in high-resolution, efficiently, and at a much larger scale."

If you're a fan of the World Cup, you probably had your sights set on a winner before the tournament kicked off. Maybe you really liked how Spain's team was shaping up (despite the coaching shifts), or you wanted to root for an underdog such as Japan or Croatia. Goldman Sachs, which knows a little something about probability and risk, built a sophisticated data model to predict the World Cup's eventual winner. This model leveraged machine learning to simulate 1 million possible evolutions, and updated throughout the tournament, according to Bloomberg. With that kind of setup, you'd think that the algorithms would get at least a few match outcomes right.
Why Did Artificial Intelligence Fail in the FIFA World Cup 2018?
There are different approaches to predict the results of FIFA World Cup. One approach is to simulate every single match in a paired comparison in terms of team's capabilities and the winning odds. Zeileis, Leitner, and Hornik (2018) used the same technique, and they predicted that Brazil would win the FIFA World Cup 2018 with a probability of 16.6%, and it is followed by Germany (15.8%) and Spain (12.5%) [1]. Swiss Bank UBS also predicted the same three teams as the top 3 teams but in a different order. They predicted Germany (24.0%) as the champion, followed by Brazil (19.80%) and Spain (16.1%).

Most people find it a pain to receive parcels in wide time slots like, say, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., so when delivery startup Paack offered a service in which everyone could narrow that window down to one hour, with no extra charge, it had a challenge on its hands. The startup's routing engine worked but needed to be more efficient. Enter Prowler.io, a Cambridge, U.K.-based machine-learning startup that bills itself as a decision-making platform for any company with complex problems to solve. Paack's contact at venture firm Balderton in London introduced it to Prowler in February 2018, and within months its delivery vans and trucks were being coordinated by an intelligent, digital simulation. With the beta test over, Paack's CEO, Fernando Benito, sees a potential benefit to his bottom line. Some of his startup's deliveries are now 15% more efficient, he tells Forbes.

On May 27, a deluge dumped more than 6 inches of rain in less than three hours on Ellicott City, Maryland, killing one person and transforming Main Street into what looked like Class V river rapids, with cars tossed about like rubber ducks. The National Weather Service put the probability of such a storm at once in 1,000 years. Yet, "it's the second time it's happened in the last three years," says Jeff Allenby, director of conservation technology for Chesapeake Conservancy, an environmental group. Floods are nothing new in Ellicott City, located where two tributaries join the Patapsco River. But Allenby says the floods are getting worse, as development covers what used to be the "natural sponge of a forest" with paved surfaces, rooftops, and lawns.
