BEIJING: Along a quiet residential street on the outer edges of Beijing, a yellow and black cube about the size of a small washing machine trundles leisurely to its destination. This "little yellow horse" is an autonomous delivery robot, ferrying daily essentials like drinks, fruit and snacks from the local store to the residents of the "Kafka" compound in the Chinese capital. Equipped with a GPS system, cameras and radar, the robots are seen by their creator as the future of logistics in China, where he says one billion packages will eventually be delivered every day. Travelling at a less than overwhelming three kilometres (two miles) per hour -- a slow human walk -- the robot has room for improvement, said one customer as she removed a packet of nuts from its bowels. "The weak point is that it cannot deliver directly to the door like a human," said the customer, who does not live on the ground floor.

Incredible aerial photographs of a'new Stonehenge' have been snapped over Ireland as a summer heatwave reveals the foundations of ancient buildings across the British Isles. The never-before-seen monument is made up of a ring of prehistoric ditches now buried deep underground. It was spotted in County Meath close to a 5,000-year-old Neolithic tomb called Newgrange. Leaked images appearing to show the Galaxy Note 9 has revealed further details of Samsung's next premium handset. The latest images come courtesy of notorious leaker Evan Blass, who shared a photo on Twitter showing the front and rear of the device, and a Chinese Twitter user who posted a picture of what seemed to be a switched-on Note 9. It appears to confirm that Samsung is sticking with a very similar design to that of the Galaxy Note 8, which featured an S Pen stylus. After two more meetings, in Tokyo and Silicon Valley, Son agreed to lead a massive $121 million investment in Light, through his SoftBank Vision Fund. Leica Camera also joined the deal. A big reason that Light was able to attract so much funding is the promise of robots, drones and, especially, self-driving cars. Light uses complex algorithms to combine images from multiple camera modules into a single, high-quality image with depth.

Thousands of the world's pre-eminent technology experts called for a global ban on the development of lethal autonomous weapons, warning they could become instruments of "violence and oppression". More than 2,400 individuals and 150 companies from 90 different countries vowed to play no part in the construction, trade, or use of autonomous weapons in a pledge signed on Wednesday at the 2018 International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Stockholm, Sweden. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, and representatives of Google's DeepMind subsidiary were among supporters of the pledge. "The decision to take a human life should never be delegated to a machine," a statement said. "Lethal autonomous weapons - selecting and engaging targets without human intervention - would be dangerously destabilising for every country and individual."

According to this year's GII report, China was the main driver for a record increase in intellectual property filings in 2016. The country also has been a leading investor in autonomous vehicles, education technology, virtual reality, robotics, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, according to another global innovation report by the Atlantic Council, a Washington D.C.-based think tank focusing on international affairs.
