How AI could transform the way we measure kids' intelligence

There is a saying in education that you treasure what you measure. Going by the standardized tests that dominate schools in many countries around the world, we're teaching children that we value only a very narrow definition of intelligence--the ability to solve word problems about train times, or identify the purpose of a World War I treaty on a multiple-choice test. The truth is human intelligence is vast and complex. And in an age when artificial intelligence is capable of nailing IQ tests and mastering knowledge-based curricula, humans may be setting ourselves up to be outshone by technology. "I think we are in danger of dumbing ourselves down," says Rose Luckin, a professor of learning-centered design at University College London who has been studying artificial intelligence and learning for more than 25 years.

My name is Kris Coratti. Thank you for joining us on this very rainy morning. I'm glad you all made it out. We are going to have a fascinating series of discussion this morning on artificial intelligence. This is the latest in our ongoing event series that we call "Transformers." And our speakers this morning are going to explore the regulatory questions around this technology. They going to look at how AI is reshaping the way we live and work. And they're going to discuss how to make sure this technology is used responsibly in the future. The pace at which companies are investing in artificial intelligence (AI) continues to gain momentum and the financial sector is not immune to this trend. According to research by global management consultancy Accenture, banks that invest in AI and human-machine collaboration tools could boost their revenue by over a third (34 per cent) by 2022. AI is considered one of the most important disruptive technologies for today's banks, with a recent PwC survey revealing that 72 per cent of senior management see AI and machine learning (ML) as key sources of competitive advantage. The survey also highlighted that 52 per cent of companies in the financial services sector are already making substantial commitments to AI, with 66 per cent projecting significant investments by 2020. The finance sector has been using AI in very specific areas for some time, but we're now seeing a rapid growth in take-up due to increasing market competition, the need to reduce overheads and the benefits of harnessing increasing volumes of data. "Banks are experiencing massive competitive pressure from multiple organizations that don't carry the same technical debt in the form of legacy software," highlights Daniel Kroening, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford.

We live in a data-driven world. For instance, if you activate location services on Google Maps and, a year later, go to your timeline, it can tell you where you were on the same day the year prior. If you turn on Facebook Activation services, it suggests friends you should request when you go somewhere. Successful enterprises are extracting information and intelligence from all the data being collected to identify their target customers and sell products and services to them. In the current disruptive market environment, data is driving change to business models.


Why AI could be the very best second opinion in medicine

It was not the football World Cup, but the defeat was not unlike Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi losing on the same day. An artificial intelligence system recorded a 2-0 victory against elite physicians on 30 June 2018 in two rounds of a competition in Beijing to diagnose brain tumours and predict the expansion of brain hematomas, or bruises. BioMind, developed by researchers from the AI Research Centre for Neurological Disorders and Capital Medical University, made correct diagnoses in 87 per cent of 225 cases in about 15 minutes. A team of 15 doctors from top hospitals across China achieved 66 per cent accuracy in 30 minutes. The AI system also made correct predictions in 83 per cent of brain hematoma expansion cases, outperforming the physicians, who had only 63 per cent accuracy.

Interest in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning is booming, fueled by the growth in affordable data storage and computing. The AI phenomenon is creating a new wave of technologies destined to disrupt societies and multi-billion-dollar industries. It is little wonder that IDC is predicting a 50.1% compound annual growth rate increase for global spending on AI, reaching $57.6 billion by 2021. However, the debate about machines performing a greater number of tasks once requiring human intelligence is both controversial and divisive. Google recently faced an ethical backlash over the sophistication of its AI tools.


Russian hackers may have penetrated US electricity network and could turn off power, officials say

Russian hackers might have access to US electric utilities and could use them to cause blackouts across the country, according to new warnings. The group โ€“ who worked for a Russian state-sponsored group known as Dragonfly or Energetic Bear โ€“ gained access to networks last year and the campaign is probably continuing, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The hackers have already claimed "hundreds of victims", according to officials. But much of their most dangerous work might not actually have happened yet โ€“ with cyber attacks gaining access to the most critical parts of the US infrastructure and then sitting inside of it. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.

The pace of acceleration in the past several years in AI seems to be starting to climb the exponential part of the "S" curve. From playing Go, to translating one human language into another, to predicting and attempting to compose hit tunes, to diagnosing disease from radiographic images, AI is starting to approach or exceed human abilities. These gains are being reported in specific or narrow AI, as opposed to general AI or Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which some might deem real AI. Without debating the definition or attainability of real AI, I want to muse on whether emerging AI could augment (or even democratize?) This is important because just narrow AI will disrupt a significant portion of the work force within this generation, and empowering entrepreneurs may be a worthy goal for mitigating this inevitability, as well as a productive strategy for regional and national economic growth.


10 Promising AI Applications in Health Care - Critical Future

There's a lot of excitement right now about how artificial intelligence (AI) is going to change health care. And many AI technologies are cropping up to help people streamline administrative and clinical health care processes. According to venture capital firm Rock Health, 121 health AI and machine learning companies raised $2.7 billion in 206 deals between 2011 and 2017. The field of health AI is seemingly wide--covering wellness to diagnostics to operational technologies--but it is also narrow in that health AI applications typically perform just a single task. We investigated the value of 10 promising AI applications and found that they could create up to $150 billion in annual savings for U.S. health care by 2026.
