Wi-Fi) and the second/third/fourth generation (2/3/4G) mobile network, the number of mobile phones, which is 7.74 billion, 103.5 per 100 inhabitants all over the world in 2017, is rising dramatically [1]. Nowadays, mobile phone can not only send voice and text messages, but also easily and conveniently access the Internet which has been recognized as the most revolutionary development of Mobile Internet (M-Internet). Meanwhile, worldwide active mobile-broadband subscriptions in 2017 have increased to 4.22 billion, which is 9.21% higher than that in 2016 [1]. Figure 1 shows the numbers of mobile-cellular telephone and active mobile-broadband subscriptions of the world and main districts from 2010 to 2017. The numbers which are up to the bars are the mobile-cellular telephone or active mobile-broadband subscriptions (million) in the world of the year which increase each year. Under the M-Internet, various kinds of content (image, voice, video, etc.) can be sent and received everywhere and the related applications emerge to satisfy people's requirements, including working, study, daily life, entertainment, education, healthcare, etc. In China, mobile applications giants, i.e., Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent, held 78% of M-Internet online time per day in App which was about 2,412 minutes in 2017 [2]. This figure indicates that M-Internet has entered a rapidly growth stage.

Gharib, Shayan, Derrar, Honain, Niizumi, Daisuke, Senttula, Tuukka, Tommola, Janne, Heittola, Toni, Virtanen, Tuomas, Huttunen, Heikki
In this paper we study the problem of acoustic scene classification, i.e., categorization of audio sequences into mutually exclusive classes based on their spectral content. We describe the methods and results discovered during a competition organized in the context of a graduate machine learning course; both by the students and external participants. We identify the most suitable methods and study the impact of each by performing an ablation study of the mixture of approaches. We also compare the results with a neural network baseline, and show the improvement over that. Finally, we discuss the impact of using a competition as a part of a university course, and justify its importance in the curriculum based on student feedback.
Classification of EEG Signal based on non-Gaussian Neutral Vector
In the design of brain-computer interface systems, classification of Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is the essential part and a challenging task. Recently, as the marginalized discrete wavelet transform (mDWT) representations can reveal features related to the transient nature of the EEG signals, the mDWT coefficients have been frequently used in EEG signal classification. In our previous work, we have proposed a super-Dirichlet distribution-based classifier, which utilized the nonnegative and sum-to-one properties of the mDWT coefficients. The proposed classifier performed better than the state-of-the-art support vector machine-based classifier. In this paper, we further study the neutrality of the mDWT coefficients. Assuming the mDWT vector coefficients to be a neutral vector, we transform them non-linearly into a set of independent scalar coefficients. Feature selection strategy is proposed on the transformed feature domain. Experimental results show that the feature selection strategy helps improving the classification accuracy.
Impacts of Weather Conditions on District Heat System
Xie, Jiyang, Ma, Zhanyu, Guo, Jun
Using artificial neural network for the prediction of heat demand has attracted more and more attention. Weather conditions, such as ambient temperature, wind speed and direct solar irradiance, have been identified as key input parameters. In order to further improve the model accuracy, it is of great importance to understand the influence of different parameters. Based on an Elman neural network (ENN), this paper investigates the impact of direct solar irradiance and wind speed on predicting the heat demand of a district heating network. Results show that including wind speed can generally result in a lower overall mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) (6.43%) than including direct solar irradiance (6.47%); while including direct solar irradiance can achieve a lower maximum absolute deviation (71.8%) than including wind speed (81.53%). In addition, even though including both wind speed and direct solar irradiance shows the best overall performance (MAPE=6.35%).
Dirichlet Mixture Model based VQ Performance Prediction for Line Spectral Frequency
In this paper, we continue our previous work on the Dirichlet mixture model (DMM)-based VQ to derive the performance bound of the LSF VQ. The LSF parameters are transformed into the $\Delta$LSF domain and the underlying distribution of the $\Delta$LSF parameters are modelled by a DMM with finite number of mixture components. The quantization distortion, in terms of the mean squared error (MSE), is calculated with the high rate theory. The mapping relation between the perceptually motivated log spectral distortion (LSD) and the MSE is empirically approximated by a polynomial. With this mapping function, the minimum required bit rate for transparent coding of the LSF is estimated.
Double Supervised Network with Attention Mechanism for Scene Text Recognition
Gao, Yuting, Huang, Zheng, Dai, Yuchen
In this paper, we propose Double Supervised Network with Attention Mechanism (DSAN), a novel end-to-end trainable framework for scene text recognition. It incorporates one text attention module during feature extraction which enforces the model to focus on text regions and the whole framework is supervised by two branches. One supervision branch comes from context-level modelling and another comes from one extra supervision enhancement branch which aims at tackling inexplicit semantic information at character level. These two supervisions can benefit each other and yield better performance. The proposed approach can recognize text in arbitrary length and does not need any predefined lexicon. Our method outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods on three text recognition benchmarks: IIIT5K, ICDAR2013 and SVT reaching accuracy 88.6%, 92.3% and 84.1% respectively which suggests the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Approximate Probabilistic Neural Networks with Gated Threshold Logic
Krestinskaya, Olga, James, Alex Pappachen
-- Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) is a feed-forward artificial neural network developed for solving classification problems. This paper proposes a hardware implementation of an approximated PNN (APNN) algorithm in which the conventional exponential function of the PNN is replaced with gated threshold logic. The weights of the PNN are approximated using a memristive crossbar architecture. In particular, the proposed algorithm performs normalization of the training weights, and quantization into 16 levels which significantly reduces the complexity of the circuit. Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) in comparison to the other neural network types have a faster training phase where the training data is used for computing the probability density functions (PDF) of each data category.

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Thuwal, Makkah Province, Saudi Arabia Abstract-- Synaptic Sampling Machine (SSM) is a type of neural network model that considers biological unreliability of the synapses. We propose the circuit design of the SSM neural network which is realized through the memristive-CMOS crossbar structure with the synaptic sampling cell (SSC) being used as a basic stochastic unit. The increase in the edge computing devices in the Internet of things era, drives the need for hardware acceleration for data processing and computing. The computational considerations of the processing speed and possibility for the real-time realization pushes the synaptic sampling algorithm that demonstrated promising results on software for hardware implementation. Biological neural networks are extensively studied in the past century with an aim to mimic the human intelligence to build machine having abilities of cognition, perception and consciousness.
Binary Weighted Memristive Analog Deep Neural Network for Near-Sensor Edge Processing
Krestinskaya, Olga, James, Alex Pappachen
Abstract-- The memristive crossbar aims to implement analog weighted neural network, however, the realistic implementation of such crossbar arrays is not possible due to limited switching states of memristive devices. In this work, we propose the design of an analog deep neural network with binary weight update through backpropagation algorithm using binary state memristive devices. We show that such networks can be successfully used for image processing task and has the advantage of lower power consumption and small on-chip area in comparison with digital counterparts. The proposed network was benchmarked for MNIST handwritten digits recognition achieving an accuracy of approximately 90%. The use of the resistive switching memories in crossbar provides an option to build analog computing neural networks to implements dot product operation [1].
Attributes' Importance for Zero-Shot Pose-Classification Based on Wearable Sensors
Ohashi, Hiroki, Al-Naser, Mohammad, Ahmed, Sheraz, Nakamura, Katsuyuki, Sato, Takuto, Dengel, Andreas
This paper presents a simple yet effective method for improving the performance of zero-shot learning (ZSL). ZSL classifies instances of unseen classes, from which no training data is available, by utilizing the attributes of the classes. Conventional ZSL methods have equally dealt with all the available attributes, but this sometimes causes misclassification. This is because an attribute that is effective for classifying instances of one class is not always effective for another class. In this case, a metric of classifying the latter class can be undesirably influenced by the irrelevant attribute. This paper solves this problem by taking the importance of each attribute for each class into account when calculating the metric. In addition to the proposal of this new method, this paper also contributes by providing a dataset for pose classification based on wearable sensors, named HDPoseDS. It contains 22 classes of poses performed by 10 subjects with 31 IMU sensors across full body. To the best of our knowledge, it is the richest wearable-sensor dataset especially in terms of sensor density, and thus it is suitable for studying zero-shot pose/action recognition. The presented method was evaluated on HDPoseDS and outperformed relative improvement of 5.9% in comparison to the best baseline method.
