DRDO develops indigenous landing gear for UAV

Chennai: An indigenously designed and developed landing gear for the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-Rustom II has been successfully tested on Thursday, a defence statement said. The landing gear developed by a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratory here has undergone low-speed and high-speed taxi trial in Chitradurga, Karnataka, it said. The maiden flight of Rustom II with the indigenously developed gear was successfully carried out. "The Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), the main laboratory of DRDO, has designed and developed the gear," the statement said. Rustom II is a medium-altitude long-endurance UAV designed for carrying out surveillance for the armed forces.


Google's "Don't be evil" apparently doesn't apply in China

Google (Alphabet) recently decided to end its participation in a US military drone program, whereby Google had been supplying its AI technology to the US government. This came after 4,000 Googlers decried the company's involvement in what could turn into "autonomous killing machines," demanding an exit from "the business of war." It was Google deciding to live up to its "Don't be evil" mantra. Apparently that same credo doesn't apply to embracing state-sponsored censorship in authoritarian China. Eight years ago Google co-founder Sergey Brin told The Wall Street Journal, "[I]n some aspects of [China's] policy, particularly with respect to censorship, with respect to surveillance of dissidents, I see some earmarks of totalitarianism." Today, when cash is on the line, the company is marching back into China with a state-censored search tool.


New advance with conversational robots

The new research stems from a symbiotic human-robot interaction project from the Japan Science and Technology Agency. This is based around the development of a multimodal conversation control system together with a multi-robot conversation control system. These have been designed to create a robot that possess a much higher degree of human-like presence than any comparable robot today. A secondary aim is to create a robot with a'sense of conversing'. This outcome of the project is to design a new generation of conversational robots, starting with a child-like android dubbed'ibuki'.


Google Is Playing the Long Game in Africa, but Will Its AI Center Pay Off?

Google's forays into Africa have culminated in the announcement of the company's first AI center on the continent, which is set to launch in Ghana's capital of Accra later this year. Google chose Ghana for its strong set of local universities in a bid to lure the brightest graduates. Ghana is also home to an office of the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences. "We're looking at Ghana, and more widely at Africa, as a location where we want to invest in new areas of interest," Jason Freidenfelds, a senior communications manager at Google, told Adweek. "There are many talented researchers working on AI in Africa now, and it's our goal to collaborate with them more closely by opening a location in Accra."

"The event will provide an excellent opportunity to both industry and stakeholders to connect with the best minds to explore how to fuel their business growth," said K.J. George, Minister for Large and Medium Scale Industries, IT, BT and Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka, in a statement.


GE Engineer Linked to China Stole Power Plant Technology, FBI Says

Xiaoqing Zheng, a U.S. citizen, was hired by GE in 2008 to work in its power division in Schenectady, N.Y., according to an affidavit by a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent filed Wednesday in federal court in Albany, N.Y. The FBI is conducting a wider inquiry into the suspected theft and use of GE's trade secrets. Agents searched Mr. Zheng's house Wednesday and seized his passport, electronic devices and a handbook that explains "the type of resources the government of China will give to individuals or entities who can provide certain technologies," according to the affidavit. To conceal the documents, Mr. Zheng on July 5 embedded encrypted files into the code of a seemingly innocuous image of a sunset to send them to a personal email address, the FBI alleged. He told FBI agents that he used similar techniques to take GE materials on five to 10 previous occasions, according to the affidavit.

Many people are already using, perhaps without knowing it, tools based on artificial intelligence (AI). Almost everyone probably ignores the absence of laws that govern how it works. We are surrounded by absurd regulations (for example, in Alabama it is illegal to drive while blindfolded; in France, you can't name a pig "Napoleon," etc.), however, there are no guidelines that regulate the use of software for autonomous driving vehicles nor the algorithms that support decision making to prioritize care for hospital patients or that pre-select which job candidates should be interviewed. Fortunately, it seems that our political systems have finally understood the urgency with which we need to apply legislation to this area. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), and Representatives John K. Delaney (D-Md.) and Pete Olson (R-Texas)-- introduced a bill called The Fundamentally Understanding the Usability and Realistic Evolution of Artificial Intelligence Act of 2017, also known as the FUTURE of AI Act.

MCRM: Mother Compact Recurrent Memory A Biologically Inspired Recurrent Neural Network Architecture

LSTMs and GRUs are the most common recurrent neural network architectures used to solve temporal sequence problems. The two architectures have differing data flows dealing with a common component called the cell state also referred to as the memory. We attempt to enhance the memory by presenting a biologically inspired modification that we call the Mother Compact Recurrent Memory MCRM. MCRMs are a type of a nested LSTM-GRU architecture where the cell state is the GRU's hidden state. The relationship between the womb and the fetus is analogous to the relationship between the LSTM and GRU inside MCRM in that the fetus is connected to its womb through the umbilical cord. The umbilical cord consists of two arteries and one vein. The two arteries are considered as an input to the fetus which is analogous to the concatenation of the forget gate and input gate from the LSTM. The vein is the output from the fetus which plays the role of the hidden state of the GRU. Because MCRMs has this type of nesting, MCRMs have a compact memory pattern consisting of neurons that act explicitly in both long-term and short-term fashions. For some specific tasks, empirical results show that MCRMs outperform previously used architectures.
