AI platform, Ignio, Delivers Significant Growth
Digitate announced that it has achieved significant annual growth in both customer acquisition and revenue. The growth is due to increase in adoption of its award-winning cognitive automation product, ignio, helping enterprises dealing with IT to rapidly identify and remediate outages in minutes. According to the Economic Times of India post, the ignio, AI platform delivered $31M to TCS. According to the press release, CEO, and MD, Tata Consultancy Services, Rajesh Gopinathan, said, "Rapid breakthroughs in digital technologies โ such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and automation โ are reshaping businesses and fostering creative disruptions. The revenue and customer growth for ignio has been over 100% y-o-y. The success and growth of ignio reaffirms TCS' Business 4.0 strategy, helping customers leverage technology to innovate and gain a competitive advantage," Digitate is a venture of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

SoftBank mulls major investment in robot pizza startup Zume
SoftBank Group Corp. is in talks to invest from $500 million to $750 million in Zume Inc., a startup that makes and delivers fresh pizzas with the help of robots, according to people familiar with the conversations. Zume owns a patent for delivery trucks capable of cooking food while en route to customers. The startup's proprietary trucks are loaded in part by robots, and have ovens that fire up on demand via a remote cloud signal. The technology allows Zume to operate legally despite some laws preventing food truck companies from preparing food while a delivery vehicle is in motion. In addition to delivering pizza, Zume creates technology to manage perishable supply chain logistics and sees an opportunity to partner with companies that wish to provide freshly cooked menu items to customers.

One year ago, we wrote about the world's first robot lawyer. It is a website with a chatbot that started off with a single and free legal service: helping to appeal unfair parking tickets. When the article was published, the services was available in the UK, and in New York and Seattle. At the time, it had helped overturn traffic tickets to the value of 4 million dollars. Apart from appealing parking tickets, the website could already assist you, too, in claiming compensation if your flight was delayed.

I recently had the opportunity to travel to South Korea to look over LG's work in both the AI and robotics fields, including some detailed time with its LG CLOi Airport Guide Robot. That's a design that LG has iterated on over time, and I had the chance to sit down for an interview (via a translator) with Hyungjn Choi, LG's Leader of Life support Robot Biz. That's a fancy title to say that he's in charge (in his own words) "of robot business development and product planning" at LG. Robots in industry are nothing new, but people-centric robots are a tough challenge. Mr Choi is quite clear that the first robot was the toughest. "Technically speaking, the most difficult one is the first one that you can see when you arrive (at Seoul's Incheon International Airport), the Airport guide robot. Because we have to deal with a spacious indoor area, the environment is very noisy. There are a lot of people travelling around. The robot needs to autonomously drive around and move around these high traffic areas. Also it needs to interpret and understand different and diverse pronunciations and ways to respond to customers' needs. That was the most technologically challenging area, and in order to take on that challenge, we've specifically taken on airports. But that doesn't mean that other robots were easy, technologically! So for example, the lawnmower robot is different from other lawnmower robots you might see. Our one moves around in a specific pattern, so it can move around in a zig zag motion, so even if your ground is bumpy, it can make a very calculated movement to ensure that every part of your lawn is well managed."
UAE Artificial Intelligence camp hosts more than 600 Emiratis
The UAE Artificial Intelligence camp has hosted more than 600 Emirati pupils and university students in its first month. The camp is part of the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence, which launched in October 2017, and includes programmes to develop the skills of government employees and young people. More than 5,000 people will participate directly or in partnership programmes organised through the camp, the state-news agency Wam has reported. "We, in the UAE, are pioneering the use of AI technologies and applications to build a better future for all and ensuring that we, as a country, assume a global leadership position across all sectors," said Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Omar Al Olama. "The UAE AI Camp is an educational platform that contributes to the development of youth. It reflects the successful partnership between government, private and education sectors to achieve the objectives of the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence and supports the strategic direction of the UAE in this field."
