Harvard working with Google on AI to predict earthquake aftershocks

Researchers at Harvard University with an assist from Google said they developed an artificial intelligence system capable of forecasting aftershocks from earthquakes. The team used algorithms to analyze a database of earthquakes worldwide to predict where aftershocks might happen. Results showed the AI offered a significantly better system for predicting where an aftershock might happen. "Aftershock forecasting in particular is a challenge that's well-suited to machine learning because there are so many physical phenomena that could influence aftershock behavior and machine learning is extremely good at teasing out those relationships," said Phoebe DeVries, a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University and co-author on the study, in a statement. Details on the AI system were published in the journal Nature.

Sony won't allow Fortnite players on PlayStation to play against their friends with other consoles โ because those people are having inferior experiences. The company might allow people to take part in cross-platform play on other titles, said the company's boss. But Fortnite on PlayStation will not get that privilege, he said. And that's because the best experience is to play on PlayStation, he said. So allowing other people to play would be a compromise.
When supercomputing and AI meets the cloud ZDNet
The Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) is preparing for the installation of a new national supercomputer which will also be accessible via the cloud to researchers across Ireland. These Slippers 'Park' Themselves Back into Place
Nissan used the ProPILOT technology used in its semi-autonomous vehicles to build "self-driving" slippers. The slippers feature a motor and wheels that sink into the sole once stepped into. The sandals are currently being used at the ProPILOT Park Ryokan, a hotel in Japan, for its guest. Guest are expected to take off their shoes in the lobby and put on the slippers, which can be returned at the touch of a button.
