The Artificial Intelligence Week Middle East conference has wrapped up in Dubai, with PwC and Accenture among the sponsors and exhibitors featuring at the two-day event. Covering the banking & finance, government, and healthcare sectors, the Artificial Intelligence Week Middle East conference was held over the 4th and the 5th at the Park Hyatt in Dubai, featuring exhibitions, networking, pitches, and talks from some of the regional leaders in the field, including Xavier Anglada, Accenture Digital Lead for MENAT, and Stephen Anderson, Clients & Markets Leader for PwC Middle East. PwC in the Middle East, the event's official AI Consulting Sponsor & Partner, presented its recent annual AI report for the delegates in attendance, outlining the projected $96 billion boost to the United Arab Emirates' GDP by 2030 through the implementation of AI technologies – part of the $15.7 trillion possible worldwide windfall, and representing a 13.6 percent contribution to the UAE's overall GDP. Accenture – the AI event's Lead Digital Transformation Partner – has itself predicted huge gains for the UAE economy through AI adoption, amounting to some $182 billion in gross value add by 2030, while Accenture and PwC between them point to sizeable potential opportunities in the financial services, utilities, healthcare, education, transport, manufacturing and retail sectors. Unsurprisingly perhaps, consumer goods CEOs in the UAE are among the world's most enthusiastic for AI according to a further recent report by KPMG.And not just consumer goods CEOs in the UAE, but both wider industry and the government and public spheres are ready to embrace artificial intelligence – at least, if the line-up of AI tech conferences being held in the Emirates is anything to go by, with among others the Artelligence Forum having taken place in Dubai in April and the World AI show scheduled again in the city for April of next year.

A new breed of robot mimics bats by using sound alone to find its way around. The four-wheeled Robat, developed by Israeli researchers, uses an echo-based sonar system to navigate and map its surroundings. A speaker sends out ultrasonic signals which bounce back off of objects and are picked up by two ultra-sensitive microphones. Experts behind the autonomous technology say it could be used during rescue operations in areas that are too dangerous for humans to reach. The Tel Aviv University team showed that Robat can pick its way through an obstacle course using sonar alone.

Google is fighting in Europe's top court today to tighten the scope of an EU privacy law that grants citizens the'right to be forgotten'. The rule allows people to demand Google remove search results that mention outdated or embarrassing information about them. This includes links to websites mentioning serious incidents - such as bankruptcy or criminal convictions - that may cause that person to be stigmatised. Google is battling with France's data privacy regulator over an order to extend the rule to remove search results worldwide upon request. The dispute pits data privacy concerns against the public's right to know, while also raising thorny questions about how to enforce differing legal jurisdictions when it comes to the borderless internet.

England captain Harry Kane has not been listed among the top 10 players in Fifa 19, despite winning the Golden Boot at the World Cup this summer. Kane picked up the accolade for the leading scorer at the 2018 Fifa World Cup, netting six goals in England's run to the semi final. He also scored more than 40 goals for Tottenham in the 2017/18 season, but was only listed as the 17th best player in Fifa's rankings. In the Fifa 19 player ratings, Kane is described as "an old-fashioned center forward... No matter what sort of goal chance Kane gets, his 90 Shooting rating shows that he can do something with just about any of them, from diving headers to distant volleys."

On May 16, via a video link, US President Donald Trump "addressed" a conference in Tianjin from Washington and floored the audience with his almost flawless Chinese. Trump highlighted the big leaps made by artificial intelligence or AI, but what impressed the audience more was the US president's tone - his Chinese intonations, inflections and pitch were near perfect. Well, as it transpired, the voice was not really Trump's, after all, but that of an AI-enabled voice technology developed by iFlytek Co Ltd. And, for the record, unlike his granddaughter, Trump hardly knows any Chinese. The iFlytek technology demonstrated its speech synthesis capability - it can produce an unbelievably human-like voice.

Google's artificial intelligence guru Li Fei-Fei will be leaving the search giant and returning to her professorship at Stanford, Google Cloud's CEO Diane Greene announced in a blog post Monday. Greene said Li's departure was always planned, and added that Li will continue to serve as Google Cloud's adviser for artificial intelligence and machine learning.
