Imagine landing at a major airport and the only human official you meet on your way through the terminal is a customs officer. Singapore's Changi International Airport, voted the world's best for the past six years by Skytrax, is pursuing that goal of extensive automation with such vigor that it built an entire terminal to help test the airport bots of the future. Here's an idea of what Asia's second-busiest international airport is implementing. As a plane joins the long line to land, it's detected, identified and monitored by an array of cameras and technology that bypass the traditional control tower. Once at the gate, a laser-guided aerobridge positions itself to let passengers disembark, while automated vehicles below unload baggage, dodging others that are delivering robot-packed meals or processing cargo.

A futuristic, solar-powered yacht which can cruise the globe without stopping to refuel has been unveiled by its Swiss designers. The electric SolarImpact yacht is longer than a blue whale and topped with enough solar panels to cover a regulation-size tennis court. The boat sleeps ten people, on top of accommodation for the small crew, and is loaded with artificial intelligence that allows it to be driven by a single person. Nintendo Switch Online is finally arriving. It's only taken a year-and-a-half: the Switch was first released in March 2017. In the China model, a nation leverages its large population and low costs to build a base of blue-collar manufacturing. It then steadily works its way up the value chain by producing better and more technology-intensive goods. In the India model, a country combines a large English-speaking population with low costs to become a hub for outsourcing of low-end, white-collar jobs in fields such as business-process outsourcing and software testing. If successful, these relatively low-skilled jobs can be slowly upgraded to more advanced white-collar industries. Both models are based on a country's cost advantages in the performance of repetitive, non-social and largely uncreative work -- whether manual labor in factories or cognitive labor in call centers.

Aidoc, a Tel-Aviv, Israel-based medical imaging company, announced back in August that it had gained FDA clearance for a new solution that helps radiologists triage patients using artificial intelligence (AI). Now, to meet an increase in customer demand as a result of that announcement, the company has hired Tom Shearer to manage sales in North America and Jeremy De Sy to handle sales throughout Europe. "AI isn't the future for medical imaging; it's the present," Shearer said in a prepared statement. "Aidoc is led by extraordinary individuals who have developed a revolutionary product. They're also teaching us more about how our own minds work. The forum began with a presentation from the founding director of the New York University Center for Data Science, and one of the world's leading minds in the field of deep learning, Yann LeCun.

Convoys of driverless lorries could soon take to roads across the UK with the M6/M74 corridor set to be the busiest. At least that's according to a new report that examined the routes across the country most likely to be used by firms who employ the burgeoning technology. The route between Manchester and Glasgow was found to be the most commercially valuable, while the M25 around London would see the biggest improvements in safety with the introduction of autonomous vehicles, the report forecasts. Platoons of self-driving lorries are expected to be trialled on England's motorways by the end of the year. Convoys of driverless lorries could soon take to roads across the UK, with the best routes examined in a new report by transport information firm Inrix.

Electric robo-taxis are a real possibility. Trends in transportation, energy, and demographics indicate that future vehicles will operate autonomously, run on electricity rather than fossil fuels, and be shared instead of privately owned. But before everyone can carpool in self-driving electric cars, we need places to charge them. Today, that's a challenge: there are only about 20,000 charging stations for electric vehicles in the US. McKinsey predicts that major economies (China, Europe, India, and the US) will need to invest $55 billion in charging infrastructure by 2031 to support the 140 million electric vehicles that will be on the road then.

The World Artificial Intelligence Conference, which ends on Wednesday, is hosted by China's top economic planning agency alongside its cyber and industry ministries. The conference aims to show the country's growing might as a global AI player.
