Since 2012, the top 10 US banks by total assets have participated in 81 deals to fintech startups, totaling nearly $4.1B in disclosed funding. In the last year, banks have homed in on the consumer, backing robo-advisors and companies offering easy-to-use money management apps. Goldman Sachs recently invested in Folio, a Tokyo-based company that allows consumers to invest in baskets of stocks based on themes like cybersecurity and anti-aging, in addition to offering a robo-advisory service. Goldman additionally added new alternative lending companies to its portfolio, with investments into Better Mortgage and Neyber.

Banks are starting to use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to recruit new workers to ensure fairness and reduce costs. According to KB Kookmin Bank, Monday, the lender will hire 615 new workers in the second half of the year. During the recruiting, the bank said it will use the AI system in its online interview to evaluate applicants more objectively, and the AI analysis data will be used as reference material for the face-to-face interview. It is the first time for a commercial bank to use AI technology in the recruiting process. "KB Kookmin Bank is looking for new talent with innovative ideas," said a KB Kookmin Bank official.

Artificial Intelligence, high-speed mobile internet, big data analytics and cloud technology are the four key technologies that will shape the world over the next four years says the top global business forum. A new report from the World Economic Forum (WEF), The Future of Jobs Report 2018, says the years between now and 2022 will be a hotbed for high-tech investment by companies across every industry. While the report finds that the "Fourth Industrial Revolution" will create more new jobs than it destroys, artificial intelligence will have a significant impact in the next four years. In 2018 about 29 per cent of total "task hours" are performed by machines in 12 industries studied by the WEF. By 2022 the average is expected to shift to 42 per cent performed by machines.


Cyber Spies Don't Have to Worry About Robots Taking Their Jobs, Intel Chief Says

Young hackers and data miners gunning for a job in the intelligence community don't need to worry about robots taking their jobs, the director of national intelligence said Tuesday. Artificial intelligence and machine learning systems will increasingly help intelligence agencies parse the behemoth troves of data they collect, but humans will still need to analyze that data for insights and ensure it isn't manipulated by foreign hackers, Director Dan Coats told students at The Citadel military college in Charleston, S.C. "Our problem now is we have more demand for these types of capabilities, including cybersecurity and so forth, than we have supply," Coats said in response to a student question about the effects of artificial intelligence on hiring. "Those of you who are in curriculum that fits into those categories, Uncle Sam needs you," Coats continued. The military's broad goal with artificial intelligence, Coats said is to gather insights from satellites and other signals intelligence sources where the data is now too voluminous to be sufficiently analyzed. The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, for example, is only able to analyze about 20 percent of the data it collects right now, Coats said.

It's available as a managed service offering and part of IBM's new collection of prepackaged tools pretrained for customer service, human resources, manufacturing, and marketing use cases. "Farming has always been a complex undertaking that requires growers to manage an interconnected web of pre-season and in-season decisions while at the mercy of mother nature," the Armonk company wrote in a press release.

If we look closely, our lives are being enhanced by AI or at least with technologies and applications using algorithms that monitor and learn from our behaviour. Applications such as Google, Facebook, Spotify, Uber and Netflix use machine learning to extract street names from photos, recognise and tag friends, find favourite songs, estimate arrival times and pick-up locations, and recommend movies. As AI is developed to learn and think more like humans and to replace lower-skilled roles, its impact on future employment and data privacy has become a point of contention among technology experts, organisations, governments and the general public. In response, the University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM) will be hosting Prof Dame Wendy Hall in a public lecture on The Artificial Intelligence Revolution on Sept 30 at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur.


How AI could help solve some of society's toughest problems

Fei Fang has saved lives. At MIT Technology Review's EmTech conference on Wednesday, Fang outlined recent work across academia that applies AI to protect critical national infrastructure, reduce homelessness, and even prevent suicides. Fang explained how a system she developed in 2013, while doing her PhD at the University of Southern California, is used every day to protect 60,000 passengers on the Staten Island Ferry in New York City. There are more ferries traveling between Staten Island and Manhattan than US Coast Guard patrol boats in the same territory. Previously, one patrol boat would follow one ferry for the whole journey, leaving the other ferries unprotected.

Over the past decade, I've watched first-hand as the field of artificial intelligence has transitioned from one phase to the other. The 1980s and 1990s were a period of discovery in AI, one that I participated in through my research on speech recognition at Carnegie Mellon University and Apple.
