Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said Artificial Intelligence (AI) played key role in sustainable development, increasing happiness of people and ease of living. It also played an important role in the economic development of the State, he told a round-table meet on'Artificial Intelligence and the paradigm shift' in New York. The State government had been using cloud management and data storage in governance. Every issue was being analysed with the help of Information Technology and real-time governance. The government was making the best use of technologies in extending services to the people like, to name one, the Bhudar to prevent tampering of land records.


UK cyber security giant is now worth $1.65bn

AI and cyber security firm Darktrace has raised $50 million in funding at a valuation of $1.65 billion. The investment is led by European private equity firm Vitruvian Partners with participation from existing investors KKR and 1011 Ventures. Darktrace uses artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to automatically detect cyber threats to its customers' networks. The Cambrige-headquartered business claims that its Antigena product can respond automatically to cybersecurity issues within two seconds. Its roster of customers includes eight major international airports including London Gatwick.


Plowing millions into Uber, Toyota prepares for a future with fewer privately owned cars

Toyota Motor Corp., Asia's biggest carmaker, is preparing for a potential future where people don't buy cars. That's behind the hefty investments the company has made in ride-hailing providers, most prominently the $1 billion it poured into Southeast Asian leader Grab. Toyota sees the partnership as an opportunity to get Grab to buy more of its cars and push services like insurance and maintenance, said Shigeki Tomoyama, the global head of Toyota's connected car division, in an interview this month in Nagoya. The pact with Singapore-based Grab forms the Asia prong of Toyota's strategy to tie up with the strongest ride-hailing companies in each region, and then integrate its hardware and software into their services. Toyota is seeking an edge over rivals as carmakers position for an uncertain future in which automated driving and the sharing economy threaten to displace the traditional model of vehicle ownership.

Google started out as a simple search engine in 1998 and has turned into one of the most important and influential companies in the world. On Thursday, the company celebrates its 20th birthday, and although searching for something on the internet has commonly become "googling", the company itself has become a part of the everyday lives in more ways than one. Google was officially founded in September 1997 but September 1998 is generally seen as the date the company really started its now ubiquitous search engine. The search engine was created for about $100,000 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, two Stanford PhD students, who wanted to challenge Altavista and Yahoo, the two most popular search engines in the earlier days of the internet. As its popularity grew, the company expanded to new territories.

TIANJIN, CHINA – The award-winning film "Tree" offers a rare multisensory virtual reality experience of becoming a rainforest tree from a seedling in just 15 minutes. Reading a short speech into a microphone analyzes your voice and tells who you are -- your sex, height, skull type, personality and emotional state. A high-resolution video camera identifies you from 500 meters away. These computational imaging and artificial intelligence-driven technologies were all on display at the World Economic Forum's conference in Tianjin, China, last week. Some 2,500 leaders from politics, academia and a range of business sectors, including many startups, from around the world gathered in the city for the Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2018 -- often dubbed the "Summer Davos" -- where they experienced these advanced technologies and discussed how those such as AI and blockchain will influence society in the coming years.


How AI can help after disaster

On March 11, 2011, one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded shook the northeastern coast of Japan, causing a tsunami that killed nearly 20,000 people. More than 2,000 remain missing. The Tohoku region outside of Tokyo was hit especially hard, forcing the local community to completely rethink how it responds to future disasters. With the help of a grant from Microsoft's AI for Earth program, researchers like Bai Yanbing of Tohoku University are attempting to harness the power of artificial intelligence solutions to improve mapping technology so that relief workers might stand a better chance of saving more lives when the next earthquake hits. "Japan is very much earthquake country," warns Professor Jun Murai of Keio University.

Artificial intelligence used to detect early signs of dementia

The types of information assessed by the artificial intelligence includes delays in responses, intonation, the percentage of verbs and nouns used, voice articulation and recall. Also looked at is the'gaze' of the patient, in terms of how attentive they are. These algorithms were developed based on an assessment of features of speech, language, and faces taken from recorded dialogues with elderly participants. Some of the participants had dementia, at various stages, and some did not. In trials, the artificial intelligence has successfully learnt how to differentiate for dementia without need to be programmed, at a rate of 90 percent success based on asking just six questions. The typical time taken for the assessment was just two to three minutes. Commenting on this, lead researcher Takashi Kudo stated, as quoted by European Pharmaceutical review: "If this technology is further developed, it will become possible to know whether or not an elderly individual is in the early stages of dementia through conversations with computer avatars at home on a daily basis." The test has been reported to the journal IEEE Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine. The research is titled "Detecting Dementia through Interactive Computer Avatars."
