New technologies are helping to tackle one of the great scourges of air travel - airport queues. Queues to check-in and drop your bags, at security, at passport control and finally queues at your boarding gate. Air travel can be a frustrating business, even if these queues are largely a result of airports trying to ensure our safety. And as more of us fly - 4.4 billion passengers are forecast to take to the skies in 2018 - airports are being pushed to their limits. So the industry is hoping technology can streamline the process, with increasing use of biometrics such as facial recognition - and not just at passport control.

Google is using AI to predict floods in India and warn users
For years Google has warned users about natural disasters by incorporating alerts from government agencies like FEMA into apps like Maps and Search. Now, the company is making predictions of its own. As part of a partnership with the Central Water Commission of India, Google will now alert users in the country about impending floods. The service is only currently available in the Patna region, with the first alert going out earlier this month. As Google's engineering VP Yossi Matias outlines in a blog post, these predictions are being made using a combination of machine learning, rainfall records, and flood simulations.

Load up the homepage for e-commerce giant, Alibaba – a wholesale shopping site that's more or less China's answer to eBay – and you'll find images and descriptions of anything you could wish to buy, from kitchen sinks to luxury yachts. Every item has a short headline, but most are little more than lists of keywords: hand-picked search terms to ensure this USB phone charger or that pair of flame-resistant overalls float to the top in a sea of thousands upon thousands of similar items. It sounds simple, but there's an art to this copywriting. Yet Alibaba recently revealed that it is training an artificial intelligence to generate these item descriptions automatically – and they're not the only ones. Over the last few decades AIs have been taught to compose music, paint pictures and write (bad) poems. "Generative bots are the new chatbot," says Jun Wang at University College London.

As a tech geek and writer for an IT company, I love having discussions about things like Blockchain and AI -- and their impact on our current and future lives -- with my layman best friend (who works in Public Security). He's still waiting for the day I show up at his house in a fully operating Iron Man-like flight suit. I still believe that one day I will. A while ago, we had a very interesting discussion about AI and intelligent systems in general, which reminded me how important it is to regularly talk to people outside of your field of work, to gain new insights. I realize that my friend was intuitively meshing his definition of'Intelligence' with a vague notion of Free Will, which I find to be a strong and useful intuition. The discussion also led me to want to have a better understanding of the current developments in applied Artificial Intelligence in the world, so as to be able to make a better informed prediction of its future.
Alibaba unveils 'Space Egg' robot that's set to work in Chinese hotels
Alibaba will soon deploy robot bellhops to deliver room service at hotels. The Chinese tech giant's A.I. Labs has unveiled a robot, dubbed'Space Egg,' which uses artificial intelligence to tend to hotel guests needs. It can deliver food or laundry and even recognize voice commands thanks to Alibaba's voice assistant, Tmall Genie. Space Egg stands at just 3.3ft and glides along at a pace of just two miles per hour. Once a guest places an order using the Tmall Genie in their hotel room, the aluminum robot picks up the item from an employee or a robotic dispenser and delivers it to the guest.
Belief Integration and Source Reliability Assessment
Merging beliefs requires the plausibility of the sources of the information to be merged. They are typically assumed equally reliable when nothing suggests otherwise. A recent line of research has spun from the idea of deriving this information from the revision process itself. In particular, the history of previous revisions and previous merging examples provide information for performing subsequent merging operations. Yet, no examples or previous revisions may be available. In spite of the apparent lack of information, something can still be inferred by a try-and-check approach: a relative reliability ordering is assumed, the sources are integrated according to it and the result is compared with the original information. The final check may contradict the original ordering, like when the result of merging implies the negation of a formula coming from a source initially assumed reliable, or it implies a formula coming from a source assumed unreliable. In such cases, the reliability ordering assumed in the first place can be excluded from consideration. Such a scenario is proved real under the classifications of source reliability and definitions of belief integration considered in this article: sources divided in two, three or multiple reliability classes; integration is mostly by maximal consistent subsets but also weighted distance is considered.
