For the many potential application areas where artificial intelligence can deliver breakthrough transformation, unlock efficiencies and augment human life, one of the most impactful areas – at least in the Indian context – will be the value it can bring to the field of agriculture. According to Indian Brand Equity Foundation, nearly 58% of India's population relies on agriculture as their primary source of livelihood. The total export of agricultural commodities for India is expected to hit $38.1 billion in FY18, making the country one of the top 15 exporters globally. However, agriculture in India is riddled with systemic problems, which AI is well placed to address. First, the traditionally unorganised agriculture sector continues to be difficult to organise due to our vast geography combined with our cultural and linguistic diversity.

Artificial Intelligence-driven machines can be fooled, warn IISc researchers

Machine-learning and artificial intelligence algorithms used in sophisticated applications such as for autonomous cars are not foolproof and can be easily manipulated by introducing errors, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) researchers have warned. Machine-learning and AI software are trained with initial sets of data such as images of cats and it learns to identify feline images as more such data are fed. A common example is Google throwing up better results as more people search for the same information. Use of AI applications is becoming mainstream in areas such as healthcare, payments processing, deploying drones to monitor crowds, and for facial recognition in offices and airports. "If your data input is not clear and vetted, the AI machine could throw up surprising results and that could end up being hazardous. In autonomous driving, the AI engine should be trained properly on all road signs. If the input sign is different, then it could change the course of the vehicle, leading to a catastrophe," R Venkatesha Babu, Associate Professor at IISc's Department of Computational Sciences, told ET. "The system also needs to have enough cyber security measures to prevent hackers from intruding and altering inputs," he said.

Yet the Australian Government's announced just $29m over 4 yrs in The Budget. "Paltry" is the only word I can use to adequately describe that.


CSI-Net: Unified Human Body Characterization and Action Recognition

Channel State Information (CSI) of WiFi signals becomes increasingly attractive in human sensing applications due to the pervasiveness of WiFi, robustness to illumination and view points, and little privacy concern comparing to cameras. In majority of existing works, CSI sequences are analyzed by traditional signal processing approaches. These approaches rely on strictly imposed assumption on propagation paths, reflection and attenuation of signal interacting with human bodies and indoor background. This makes existing approaches very difficult to model the delicate body characteristics and activities in the real applications. To address these issues, we build CSI-Net, a unified Deep Neural Network (DNN), that fully utilizes the strength of deep feature representation and the power of existing DNN architectures for CSI-based human sensing problems. Using CSI-Net, we jointly solved two body characterization problems: biometrics estimation (including body fat, muscle, water and bone rates) and human identification. We also demonstrated the application of CSI-Net on two distinctive action recognition tasks: the hand sign recognition (fine-scaled action of the hand) and falling detection (coarse-scaled motion of the body). Besides the technical contribution of CSI-Net, we present major discoveries and insights on how the multi-frequency CSI signals are encoded and processed in DNNs, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first attempt that bridges the WiFi sensing and deep learning in human sensing problems.

Quantifying artificial intelligence's direct impact through both key performance metrics and via the explosion of data analytics within the last decade has advanced implementation of machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions. But pinpointing artificial intelligence's potential to shape the health market is yet to be determined.


This AI can help spot biased websites and false news

Keeping in mind the overall trustworthiness of the website itself--and checking its Wikipedia page, if it has one--is a good step for regular people, too. For example, in August, Facebook and a cybersecurity firm announced they'd uncovered "inauthentic" news coming out of Iran. One of the websites associated with Iran was called the Liberty Front Press; they called themselves "independent" but appeared to actually be pro-Iran. And tellingly, the site does not appear to have a Wikipedia page. Of course, the MIT research group aren't the only ones using AI to analyze language like this: a Google-made AI system called Jigsaw automatically scores the toxicity of reader comments, and Facebook has turned to AI to help augment its efforts to keep hate speech at bay in Myanmar.

British security services speak out over claims China planted tiny chips in Apple and Amazon computers

British security services have spoken out about claims that China managed to plant tiny chips in computers that made their way across the US. The bombshell report came from Bloomberg News this week and alleged that special agents in the People's Liberation Army had dropped tiny components into computer hardware before it left the country. It would eventually go on to be used by companies including Amazon, Apple and many others, as well as the US defence establishment. Such a hack would allow spies to look in on messages being sent across Apple's cloud services, for instance, and intercept messages as soon as they are sent. And a hardware breakthrough of that kind would mark a step change in the kind of hacks that are possible, since they could not be easily found or fixed.
