Artificial intelligence aids automatic monitoring of single molecules in cells

A research team centered at Osaka University, in collaboration with RIKEN, has developed a system that can overcome these difficulties by automatically searching for, focusing on, imaging, and tracking single molecules within living cells. The team showed that this approach could analyze hundreds of thousands of single molecules in hundreds of cells in a short period, providing reliable data on the status and dynamics of molecules of interest. For the development of this method, reported in the journal Nature Communications, the team used an artificial intelligence-based system, involving the training of neural networks to learn to focus correctly on a sample and to automatically search for cells, followed by the tracking of single fluorescently labeled molecules with a total internal reflection fluorescence microscope. The team tested this system on a receptor protein called EGFR, which is more or less free to move along the plasma membrane in which it is expressed depending on whether it has undergone a certain modification. Their findings showed that the system could differentiate between modifying and nonmodifying conditions by tracking the movements of single receptors in membranes.

Robot makes 'Snakes and Ladders' horrifyingly literal

Robots can't yet think for themselves, but if they ever do, you'll have nowhere to hide. Researchers from Kyoto University and the University of Electro-Communications unveiled a snake-like robot that can climb up a ladder in a terrifying version of the children's board game. It's not the first robot snake we've ever seen, but this latest model, unveiled at the 2018 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, looks like the most agile one yet. For now, it does just one thing and does it well. "This paper presents a method that allows a snake robot to climb a ladder," the abstract states.


When Can the Government Shoot Down Civilian Drones?

The Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2018 is not the most exciting-sounding piece of legislation in the world. The 1,200-page bill, which funds the FAA through 2023 and covers everything from airplane seat size to airport noise, was signed by President Donald Trump on Oct. 5 with little fanfare--even less than it might have ordinarily received, thanks to the drama of Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation. But it could have used the scrutiny: Embedded within it are provisions that give the government new authority to take down civilian drones. The omnibus legislation included the Preventing Emerging Threats Act of 2018, which authorizes the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security to "take actions" to "mitigate a credible threat (as defined by the Secretary or the Attorney General, in consultation with the Secretary of Transportation) that an unmanned aircraft system or unmanned aircraft poses to the safety or security of a covered facility or asset." This "mitigation"--which wouldn't require a warrant, or judicial review or oversight--could include physically disabling the drone, taking it over, intercepting its communications, and seizing the drone itself.

Intel Powers New AI Research Center at Technion in Israel - insideHPC

Today the Technion technological institute in Israel announced that Intel is collaborating with the institute on its new artificial intelligence (AI) research center. The announcement was made at the center's inauguration attended by Dr. Michael Mayberry, Intel's chief technology officer, and Dr. Naveen Rao, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of the Artificial Intelligence Products Group. AI is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and Intel has been working closely with a range of industry leaders to deploy AI capabilities and create new experiences. Our collaboration with Technion not only reinforces Intel Israel's AI operations, but we are also seeing advancements to the field of AI from the joint research that is under way and in the pipeline." The center features Technion's computer science, electrical engineering, industrial engineering and management departments, among others, all collaborating to drive a closer relationship between academia and industry in the race to AI. Intel, which invested undisclosed funds in the center, will represent the industry in leading AI-dedicated computing research.

All you really need is expertise, and maybe data. That's different from the technologies that have created economic growth in the past. Dangerous PlayStation message shuts down consoles and can break them

PlayStations around the world are crashing and shutting themselves off after receiving just one dangerous message. The strange attack – which mirrors similar bugs in iPhones and other tech – means that any console that tries to open the message will instead crash itself. After that, it will shut down and might not even be able to turn back on properly, according to reports. Like those other bugs, it appears that the message contains characters that the PlayStation is unable to read and which force it to break itself when it tries. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.


Facebook axe accounts of Russian firms using facial recognition

Facebook has removed accounts, pages and apps linked to firms which build facial recognition software for the Russian government. The social media giant announced on Thursday it had removed 66 accounts associated with SocialDataHub and its sister firm Fubutech. It said the companies had violated Facebook policy by scraping data from the social network. 'Facebook has reason to believe your work for the government has included matching photos from individuals' personal social media accounts in order to identify them,' the company said in a cease-and-desist letter to SocialDataHub, The New York Times reported. The companies involved, which share 52 employees in Moscow, were reportedly given until yesterday to confirm what data they had taken and delete it.
