Artificial Intelligence First Predicted in Ancient Greece. Or Was It India?
When we think of ancient Greece we generally imagine ruthless highly-trained warriors or cloth clad philosophers pondering the schematics and perimeters of geometry, geography, architecture and the like. But a new book is about to present them as "skilled forecasters, accurately predicting the rise of artificial intelligence, killer androids and driverless cars." More than 2,500 years ago, Greek mythologists, according to American historian Dr Adrienne Mayor of Stanford University, "envisioned many of the technology trends we grapple with today including Killer androids, driverless technology, GPS and AI-powered helper robots." According to an article about Mayors finding in Greek Reporter, in her forthcoming book Gods and Robots: Myths, Machines, and Ancient Dreams of Technology the creations of Hephaestus, the god of metalworking and an invention in Homer's Iliad, were "predictions of the rise of humanoid robots." Dr Mayor, who according to the Stanford University website is an independent folklorist/historian of science investigating natural knowledge contained in pre-scientific myths and oral traditions, claims Hephaestus crafted'mechanical maid's from gold that were designed to anticipate their master's requests and act on them without instruction, much like modern machine learning software.
Machines just beat humans at reading, putting millions of jobs at risk
Artificial intelligence (AI) software developed by Alibaba Group has performed better than humans in a global reading comprehension test, the first time that machines have outperformed people. The AI research arm of China's biggest online commerce company developed a machine-learning model that scored higher on the Stanford Question Answering Dataset, a large-scale reading comprehension test with more than 100,000 questions, according to a release by the company. On January 11, Alibaba's machine-learning models scored 82.44 on the test, compared with 82.304 by humans. While computers have beaten humans at complex games like chess, where raw computing power and an infallible memory have given bots an advantage, languages are generally seen as harder for machines to master. India among top 15 in artificial intelligence research - Times of India
NEW DELHI: India is among the most advanced countries in terms of development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT), according to a survey by Finnish AI-based solutions specialists Zyfra. The survey ranks the US first, followed by China, while India ranks 13th, just after Canada. The ranking is based on a study that examined the number and quality of scientific publications on the subject, a Zyfra statement said on Tuesday. It takes into account studies about AI in more than 200 countries and in the 50 most cited scientific magazines. The study has also highlighted the long gestation period required in India in bringing the research from paper to implementation stage.

The developers of the popular video game Fortnite have filed a lawsuit against two YouTube personalities for allegedly selling cheat codes to their viewers. A second YouTuber who goes by the name Exentric is also accused of directing viewers to a website selling cheats for the game. Over 50,000 jobs in data science, machine learning vacant in India: Report
Data science and machines learning are hot topics of the season, but as more and more companies are trying to tap these new technologies, the dearth of talent has also become apparent. A recent report by knowledge portal Analytics Vidhya and ed-tech platform Great Learnings, reveals that more than 50,000 positions related to data and analytics are currently vacant in India. "If we look at the number of job postings for the position of a Data Scientist, the job postings as well as the job seekers' interest show an all-time high in 2017. However, the jobseekers are almost half as much as the number of postings. This clearly indicates how the industry needs more data scientists and that we haven't really acquired the right skills to bag these available opportunities," the report says.
