In the Works – AWS Region in South Africa
Last year we launched new AWS Regions in France and China (Ningxia), and announced that we are working on regions in Bahrain, Hong Kong SAR, Sweden, and a second GovCloud Region in the United States. South Africa in Early 2020 Today, I am happy to announce that we will be opening an AWS Region in South Africa in the first half of 2020. The new Region will be based in Cape Town, will be comprised of three Availability Zones, and will give AWS customers and partners the ability to run their workloads and store their data in South Africa. The addition of the AWS Africa (Cape Town) Region will also enable organizations to provide lower latency to end users across Sub-Saharan Africa and will enable more African organizations to leverage advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Internet of Things (IoT), mobile services, and more to drive innovation. AWS customers are already making use of 55 Availability Zones across 19 infrastructure regions worldwide.

The memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Community Development (MOCD) & Alpha Data highlighted the field of modern technologies and aimed for achieving the goals of the community development mentioned in the national agenda and strategic goals 2021, coordinate and integrate roles between both parties especially in the prioritized common programs in the areas of information technology (Block Chain, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Customers Relations Management Programs and Databases, internet of things, cloud computing, mobility and cyber security) in addition to the coordination between both parties in common tasks and technological consultations. The areas of cooperation between the Ministry of Community Development (MOCD) and Alpha Data, shall include the announcement of the company in the media with the approval of both parties, provide best technical experiences and technological consultations for the Ministry and organize awareness campaigns about the importance of modern information technology. Scientists Use AI to Predict Why Children Struggle at School
University of Cambridge researchers used machine learning to attempt to define why children struggle in school. Scientists at the University of Cambridge in the U.K. have used machine learning to identify why children struggle at school, through an analysis of 550 students having difficulty. The team fed their algorithm cognitive testing information from each child, which demonstrated how the children best fit within four clusters of problems. Two clusters identified working memory skills and processing sounds in words as problem areas, while the other two defined broad cognitive difficulties in many areas and typical cognitive tests for the subjects' age. Cambridge's Joni Holmes says the results suggest "children who are finding the same subjects difficult could be struggling for very different reasons, which has important implications for selecting appropriate interventions."
Robot security guard to be tested at Tokyo station in bid to boost security ahead of 2020 Games
A robot developed to serve as a security guard at train stations was shown to the press Thursday amid a growing need to boost safety in the run-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. Equipped with a security camera powered by artificial intelligence, the robot can detect and report suspicious persons or objects at stations and is expected to help lower burdens on staff. It is named "Perseusbot" after Greek mythological hero Perseus and is 167.5 centimeters tall, 61 cm wide and 90.5 cm long. The robot will be tested at Seibu Shinjuku Station in Tokyo between Nov. 26 and 30. The robot can avoid obstacles and travel over uneven pavement during patrols. It can send alerts to the smartphones of security staff if it discovers objects left unattended for a long time or if it captures aggressive movements by individuals that could lead to conflict.
