Computational Intelligence in Sports: A Systematic Literature Review

Recently, data mining studies are being successfully conducted to estimate several parameters in a variety of domains. Data mining techniques have attracted the attention of the information industry and society as a whole, due to a large amount of data and the imminent need to turn it into useful knowledge. However, the effective use of data in some areas is still under development, as is the case in sports, which in recent years, has presented a slight growth; consequently, many sports organizations have begun to see that there is a wealth of unexplored knowledge in the data extracted by them. Therefore, this article presents a systematic review of sports data mining. Regarding years 2010 to 2018, 31 types of research were found in this topic. Based on these studies, we present the current panorama, themes, the database used, proposals, algorithms, and research opportunities. Our findings provide a better understanding of the sports data mining potentials, besides motivating the scientific community to explore this timely and interesting topic.


The Responsibility Quantification (ResQu) Model of Human Interaction with Automation

Abstract--Advanced automation is involved in information collection and evaluation, in decision-making and in the implementation of chosen actions. In such systems, human responsibility becomes equivocal, and there may exist a responsibility gap. Understanding human responsibility is particularly important when systems can harm people, as with autonomous vehicles or, most notably, with Autonomous Weapon Systems (AWS). Using Information Theory, we develop a responsibility quantification (ResQu) model of human interaction in automated systems and demonstrate its applications on decisions involving AWS. The analysis reveals that human comparative responsibility is often low, even when major functions are allocated to the human. Thus, broadly stated policies of keeping humans in the loop and having meaningful human control are misleading and cannot truly direct decisions on how to involve humans in advanced automation. Our responsibility model can guide system design decisions and can aid policy and legal decisions regarding human responsibility in highly automated systems. Financial markets largely function through algorithmic trading mechanisms [1, 2], semiconductor manufacturing is almost entirely automated [3], and decision support systems and aids for diagnostic interpretation have become part of medical practice [4, 5]. Similarly, in aviation, flight management systems control almost all parts of the flight [6, 7], and in surface transportation, public transportation is increasingly automated, and the first autonomous cars appear on public roads [8, 9]. OVER THE past five years researchers in artificial intelligence have become the rock stars of the technology world. A branch of AI known as deep learning, which uses neural networks to churn through large volumes of data looking for patterns, has proven so useful that skilled practitioners can command high six-figure salaries to build software for Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google. The top names can earn over $1m a year. The standard route into these jobs has been a PhD in computer science from one of America's elite universities. Earning one takes years and requires a disposition suited to academia, which is rare among more normal folk.

AT A CROSSING IN SHENZHEN, a giant screen displays the faces of pedestrians who dared to jaywalk, unaware they were being watched. But it wasn't police who caught them--it was street-side surveillance cameras equipped with the latest in facial recognition technology. The miscreants' mug shots are broadcast on the screen to shame others into compliance. The technology behind the stunt was provided by a local company called Intellifusion, one of the smaller players in China's advanced surveillance market. At the forefront of this booming industry are two other Chinese startups, SenseTime and Megvii, whose A.I.-powered facial recognition systems are likely the most powerful in the world.


CCTV AI tool could make finding criminals in security footage 'as easy as Googling their name'

A new search tool could make scanning through CCTV footage for a criminal as easy as Googling their name. The system uses artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically match targets in video footage to their description. This means security system could one day find a suspect by simply searching'short woman, green coat', or'tall man, red shoes.' Combined with eye-witness reports, the tool would speed up the time it takes to pick out criminals in security footage - an arduous task that normally requires police to manually comb through hours of video. Researchers from the Ahmedabad University and Lalbhai Dalpatbhai College of Engineering in India built the new tool.


Twitter says it could get rid of the Like button entirely – but not 'soon'

Twitter could be planning to kill the "like" button – but it will not be happening anytime soon. A new report claimed that the site could do away with the famous button, in an attempt to make conversations on the platform more healthy. Twitter says that it is true that it is re-considering how the site works – including its most famous and central features – but that it is early in that process and that change is not coming anytime soon. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. OnePlus has announced the latest in its series of new phones: the 6T. The phone includes features such as fingerprint recognition that is built into the display, and technology that prepares for faster 5G networks. Apple investigating reports of student workers in factories (again)

Apple is investigating reports that one of its parts suppliers is illegally using high school students on its assembly line. Hong Kong-based human rights group Sacom alleges that Taiwanese manufacturer Quanta Computer has been skirting labor laws by using teenage "interns" to assemble the Apple Watch Series 4. According to the Financial Times, Sacom interviewed nearly 30 high school students working at Quanta Computer's factory in Chongqing, China and found many of them were working on the assembly line. One high schooler said there were about 120 students working in the plant, performing the same procedures over and over again "like a robot." A number of students reported being made to work overnight and night shifts, which is illegal under Chinese labor laws. The high schoolers were supposedly sent to the factories by teachers, and a number of the students said they were told they would not graduate if they didn't complete the internships.


SBI's digital payment venture: Hitachi to use artificial intelligence, big data for new platform

India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has formed a joint venture'SBI Payment Services Private Limited' in partnership with Hitachi Payments Services, a subsidiary of Japan's Hitachi, for the establishment of card acceptance and future-ready digital payments platform in India, according to a joint statement on Monday. Hitachi Payments will pick a 26% equity stake in SBI Payment Services, while the rest will be held by SBI. As part of the partnership, Hitachi – which manages more than 55,000 ATMs and 0.85 million PoS devices across the country – will contribute to the development and augmentation of digital payments service in the country by creating an online platform. SBI and Hitachi will now seek regulatory approvals for the joint venture. The two companies will integrate each other's strengths such as Hitachi's digital technologies like artificial intelligence and big data analytics, and SBI's large customer base, branch network as well as brand trust.


Predicting Beijing's thinking via artificial intelligence and People's Daily

For decades, People's Daily, an official newspaper of the Communist Party, has been a must-read for China watchers – a window on the policies, people and perspectives the party wants to be the focus of attention. Now, an artificial intelligence programme designed by an economist with an influential US think tank is analysing the party's mouthpiece – and its propaganda – to provide those who report on the politics of China with a clearer idea of what Beijing is thinking and planning. An AI programme developed in 2016 by Weifeng Zhong, a research fellow with the American Enterprise Institute, with Julian Tszkin Chan of the Washington-based Bates White Economic Consulting firm, assesses the policy priorities of the Chinese government by observing what policies appear on the newspaper's front pages and how often. An algorithm in the newly launched programme has read and memorised all the articles in People's Daily, which was established in 1948, and in a precursor publication which existed for two years before the newspaper's official founding. If the algorithm is constantly "surprised" by the policies that appear on the journal's front page over a certain period, the conclusion is that the government is changing a policy – or adjusting the priorities underlying one.
