Learning acoustic word embeddings with phonetically associated triplet network

Previous researches on acoustic word embeddings used in query-by-example spoken term detection have shown remarkable performance improvements when using a triplet network. However, the triplet network is trained using only a limited information about acoustic similarity between words. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture, phonetically associated triplet network (PATN), which aims at increasing discriminative power of acoustic word embeddings by utilizing phonetic information as well as word identity. The proposed model is learned to minimize a combined loss function that was made by introducing a cross entropy loss to the lower layer of LSTM-based triplet network. We observed that the proposed method performs significantly better than the baseline triplet network on a word discrimination task with the WSJ dataset resulting in over 40% relative improvement in recall rate at 1.0 false alarm per hour. Finally, we examined the generalization ability by conducting the out-of-domain test on the RM dataset.

A group of some of China's smartest students have been recruited straight from high school to begin training as the world's youngest AI weapons scientists. Local media reports: The 27 boys and four girls, all aged 18 and under, were selected for the four-year "experimental programme for intelligent weapons systems" at the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) from more than 5,000 candidates, the school said on its website. The BIT is one of the country's top weapons research institutes, and the launch of the new programme is evidence of the weight it places on the development of AI technology for military use. China is in competition with the United States and other nations in the race to develop deadly AI applications -- from nuclear submarines with self-learning chips to microscopic robots that can crawl into human blood vessels.

China's state-run media Xinhua and Beijing-based search engine Sogou debuted two "AI composite anchors" -- one each for English and Chinese viewers -- at the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen Wednesday. The AI are "cloned" from real-life anchors, according to Xinhua's report, sporting the same faces and voices. The program extracts and combines the features of human anchors from videos of their reporting, using their speech, lip movements and facial expressions. But there's one difference: While human anchors work eight hours everyday, their AI clones can report news tirelessly 24/7. "AI anchors have officially become members of Xinhua's reporting team," the publication said in its report, adding, "Together with other anchors, they will bring you authoritative, timely and accurate news information in Chinese and English."

China's state-run news agency Xinhua has unveiled the latest additions to its team of reporters -- two AI anchors. The two anchors, one that speaks in English and another in Chinese, have the likeness of some of Xinhua's human anchors, but their voices, facial expressions and mouth movements are synthesized and animated using deep learning techniques. "AI anchors have officially become members of the Xinhua News Agency reporting team," the agency said. "They will work with other anchors to bring you authoritative, timely and accurate news information in both Chinese and English." China's South China Morning Post reports that the AI anchors are available through Xinhua's English and Chinese apps, its TV webpage and its WeChat public account. The technology behind the anchors is being provided by search engine company Sogou.

In Silicon Valley, Saudi Money Keeps Flowing to Startups
Two startups-- View Inc., which makes light-adjustable glass, and Zume Inc., which uses robots to make pizza--disclosed investments over the past week totaling a combined $1.5 billion from SoftBank's Saudi-backed Vision Fund. Late last month, Katerra Inc., an innovator in property construction, reached a tentative deal with the Saudi government to build up to 50,000 units of housing annually for the kingdom. That followed a $1 billion funding round led by the Vision Fund early this year that valued the Menlo Park, Calif., company at more than $3 billion. Meanwhile, negotiations continued in recent weeks for a deal in which Tokyo-based SoftBank would invest $15 billion to $20 billion to buy a majority stake in WeWork Cos. likely with Vision Fund money, according to people familiar with the discussions. A WeWork spokeswoman declined to comment.
China unveils stealth combat drone in development, looks to sell abroad
ZHUHAI, CHINA – A Chinese state-owned company says it is developing a stealth combat drone in the latest sign of the country's growing aerospace prowess. The CH-7 unmanned aerial vehicle also underscores China's growing competitiveness in the expanding global market for drones. China has won sales in the Middle East and elsewhere by offering drones at lower prices and without the political conditions attached by the U.S. The CH-7's chief designer, Shi Wen, says the aircraft can "fly long hours, scout and strike the target when necessary." "Very soon, I believe, in the next one to two years, (we) can see the CH-7 flying in the blue skies, gradually being a practical and usable product in the future," Shi told The Associated Press. Shi said manufacturer Chinese Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation plans to test fly the drone next year and begin mass production by 2022.
