Remember Elon Musk's Scary Warning Against AI? Here's More Reason to Worry.
Remember when Elon Musk, speaking at SXSW in March 2018, scared the dickens out of us by warning against artificial intelligence (AI)? "The danger of AI," Musk stated, "is much greater than the danger of nuclear warheads ... more dangerous than nukes." Now comes yet another worrisome prediction, this time from Chinese venture capitalist and the world's foremost authority on AI, Kai-Fu Lee. In an interview to be aired this Sunday on 60 Minutes, Lee says that in as soon as 15 years, 40 percent of the world's jobs could be done by machines. "AI will increasingly replace repetitive jobs, not just for blue-collar work, but a lot of white-collar work," Lee tells CBS reporter Scott Pelley.

Machine learning provides insight into the human brain – Physics World
A research collaboration headed up at the National University of Singapore (NUS) has successfully employed machine learning to investigate the cellular architecture of the human brain. The approach uses functional MRI (fMRI) data to automatically estimate brain parameters, enabling neuroscientists to infer the cellular properties of different brain regions without having to surgically probe the brain. The researchers say that their technique could potentially be used to assess treatment of neurological disorders or develop new therapies (Science Advances 10.1126/sciadv.aat7854). "The underlying pathways of many diseases occur at the cellular level, and many pharmaceuticals operate at the microscale level," explains team leader Thomas Yeo. "To know what really happens at the innermost levels of the human brain, it is crucial for us to develop methods that can delve into the depths of the brain non-invasively." Currently, most human brain studies employ non-invasive approaches such as MRI, which limits examination of the brain at a cellular level.
US-China relations in the age of artificial intelligence
Under President Donald Trump, great power competition has become the organizing principle of American foreign policy. This has led to near-daily invocations of the Cold War to describe the intensifying rivalry between the United States and China, and to frequent analogies to an "arms race" to describe bilateral competition in advanced technologies, including quantum computing and artificial intelligence (AI). Public statements and national plans from both governments have reinforced this zero-sum dynamic. Such framing has done more to conceal than clarify and, if taken to its logical end-point, will do more harm than good for the United States. AI will create both immense stress on the U.S.-China relationship as well as opportunities for potential collaboration.
Russia: Expect a National AI Roadmap by Midyear
Russia is adding details, deadlines, and dedicated funding to its draft national roadmap for the development of artificial intelligence technologies, and expects to release the final version in mid-year. The roadmap "provides for the creation of a list of projects that will help identify and remove barriers to the development of end-to-end technologies, as well as predict the market demand for artificial intelligence in the country," as state media put it in October 2018. Moreover, the new document will form a cornerstone of the larger Digital Technologies national program. Already, it appears that Moscow is increasing the amount of money it intends to devote to AI R&D. In late 2017, the government was planning to spend about $419 million (28 billion rubles) by 2020. But last October brought a new version of the 2019-21 plan for Digital Technologies which appears to call for spending nearly twice that much: $287 million for leading research centers and start-ups, $145 million to develop products, services and platforms, and $287 million for technology "at the extreme degree of readiness."

This is the main message of a JRC new report "Artificial Intelligence: A European perspective". It aims to take stock of the development of AI in the world today and lay out some of the options and pitfalls for EU policymakers in the face of strong competition, and competing visions, from the US and China. The report looks at recent developments in AI resulting from increased processing power, improvements in algorithms, and the exponential growth in the volume and variety of digital data.

Over 1,000 CCTV cameras will be used to monitor various movements across the Mela area spread across 3,200 hectares," said UP Additional Chief Secretary Awanish Awasthi. Artificial Intelligence will be used by the Integrated Command and Control Centre of the police wherein the security personnel can see the visuals of crowd movement and assess the crowd size. At the same time, they can also monitor anything which is suspicious, he said. Artificial Intelligence is a way of making a computer, a computer-controlled robot, or a software think intelligently, in the similar manner humans think.

The mathematicians, who were working on a machine-learning problem, show that the question of'learnability' -- whether an algorithm can extract a pattern from limited data -- is linked to a paradox known as the continuum hypothesis. Gödel showed that the statement cannot be proved either true or false using standard mathematical language. The latest result appeared on 7 January in Nature Machine Intelligence1.

It is not technology that will steal your job
The future of work is in hot debate all over the world. The World Economic Forum, the ILO, the International Confederation of Trade Unions, consulting firms, and universities like MIT have task forces asking what work will look like in the years ahead. There are two problems with much of these debates. The first is an over-fixation with technology. The second is the view that technology has a trajectory all its own as if there is some iron law of physics that will determine its shape and effects. I challenge both of these premises: technology will of course be important; it is one of the big "megatrends" that will influence work of the future.
