Fortnite login flaw left millions of players exposed to hackers
A major security flaw with the hugely popular game Fortnite left millions of players exposed to hackers, according to new research. Cyber security firm Check Point discovered the vulnerability, which allowed people to steal the login credentials of Fortnite players without them even knowing about it. For the attack to be successful, all the victim would have to do is click on a link shared via a chatbox on Fortnite or through social media. Once clicked, the hacker could gain access to a player's username, password, V-bucks currency and any data stored on their account – without the victim even having to enter their login credentials. The head of the Check Point research team believes it is entirely possible that these flaws could have already been exploited by hackers, despite no reported instances of attackers making use of the exploit.
Microsoft to set up 10 AI labs, train 5 lakh youth in India
BENGALURU: Microsoft India on Wednesday announced to set up Artificial Intelligence (AI) labs in 10 universities and train five lakh youth across the country in disrupting technologies. The company also said it will upskill over 10,000 developers over the next three years. "We believe AI will enable Indian businesses and more for India's progress, especially in education, skilling, healthcare and agriculture," said Anant Maheshwari, President, Microsoft India. Microsoft AI today is fuelling digital transformation for over 700 customers and 60 per cent customers are large manufacturing and financial services enterprises. Over 700 partners have geared up to support the AI ecosystem, said the company.

Xinghua, China (Reuters) - A brand new combine harvester buzzes up and down a field in eastern China without a driver on board, chopping golden rice stalks and offering a glimpse of what authorities say is the automated future of the nation's mammoth agricultural sector. The bright green prototype was operating last autumn during a trial of driverless farm equipment as the government pushes firms to develop within 7 years fully-automated machinery capable of planting, fertilizing and harvesting each of China's staple crops - rice, wheat and corn. That shift to automation is key to the farming sector in the world's No.2 economy as it grapples with an ageing rural workforce and a dearth of young people willing to endure the hardships many associate with toiling on the land. Other countries like Australia and the United States are taking similar steps in the face of such demographic pressures, but the sheer scale of China's farming industry means the stakes are particularly high in its drive to automate agriculture. "Automated farming is the way ahead and demand for it here is huge," said Cheng Yue, general manager of tractor maker Changzhou Dongfeng CVT Co Ltd, which provided an autonomous vehicle that was also used at the trial in the rice field in Xinghua, a county in the eastern province of Jiangsu.
MEPs back plans for artificial intelligence and robotics, but ethical concerns remain
MEPs in the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy backed plans on Monday evening (14 January) for a comprehensive policy framework on artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, weeks after ethical concerns in the field were highlighted in a EU report. Parliament's report, though not legally binding, gives a clear signal that MEPs will seek to pressure the Commission to draw up an industrial policy for artificial intelligence and robotics. "This is a key area and I am pleased that we have been able to make some strong suggestions on AI," British Conservative MEP Ashley Fox said on Tuesday evening. "The technology is not confined to the boundaries of the single market and it is imperative that the EU work at the international level to agree on standards." MEPs noted the future potential for AI and robotics to transform a number of sectors ranging from health, energy, manufacturing and transport, and also urged member states to develop new training programmes that cultivate skills in areas that are likely to be affected by future autonomous technologies.
Japan's robot hotel 'fires' over half its robotic workers
Japan's robot hotel, the Hen-na ("Strange") Hotel, was supposed to represent the future of lodging with automatons taking care of things that previously required'inefficient' humans. That strategy is coming apart at the seams, however. Hen-na has'fired' over half of its 243 robots after the machines frequently created more problems than they solved. The cute Chu-ri robot you see above, for instance, frequently can't answer questions or may activate in the middle of the night due to snoring. And Chu-ri-chan is just the tip of the iceberg.

Commentary: Are China, Russia winning the AI arms race?
In October 31 Chinese teenagers reported to the Beijing Institute of Technology, one of the country's premier military research establishments. Selected from more than 5000 applicants, Chinese authorities hope they will design a new generation of artificial intelligence weapons systems that could range from microscopic robots to computer worms, submarines, drones and tanks. The program is a potent reminder of what could be the defining arms race of the century, as greater computing power and self-learning programs create new avenues for war and statecraft. It is an area in which technology may now be outstripping strategic, ethical and policy thinking – but also where the battle for raw human talent may be just as important as getting the computer hardware, software and programming right. Consultancy PwC estimates that by 2030 artificial intelligence products and systems will contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy, with China and the United States likely the two leading nations.
