Samsung Galaxy X leaks reveal what foldable phone will look like
Samsung has technically already unveiled its foldable phone, expected to be called the Galaxy X or Galaxy Fold, but few concrete details are actually known about the next-generation device. Now new leaks have at last shed some light on what the strange phone might look like. During its November unveiling the firm described it as the "foundation of the smartphone of tomorrow", but the event took place in the dark so it was difficult to see what the smartphone-meets-tablet even looked like. And unlike Samsung's other forthcoming device – the Galaxy S10 – there have been few leaks to offer an idea of what to expect. The South Korean electronics giant is hosting an event on 20 February, which could see both smartphones fully revealed, but a couple of reports in recent days appear to have finally given more details about the mysterious folding phone.

Apple's new AirPods might have been accidentally confirmed – but its own iPhone update. The latest beta version of the iOS software appears to not only suggest that new versions of the wireless earphones are coming soon, but also what one of their main features might be. The leak comes from a hidden part of the iOS 12.2 update which is currently available for developers. Inside a pop-up that is not visible without digging around is a suggestion about how those nearphones might work. While a user is setting up the option to speak to the phone's digital assistant just by saying "Hey, Siri", the message suggests that people will be able to do so just by speaking into their AirPods, rather than into their phone.
Machine learning shows promise in optimizing ICU blood tests
A computational approach has the potential to help clinicians in intensive care units make better decisions about ordering common blood tests. Results of their study, presented earlier this month at the 2019 Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing, showed that using a machine learning algorithm developed by Princeton University researchers could have reduced the number of lab orders for white blood cell tests by as much as 44 percent. In addition, researchers demonstrated that their approach would have helped inform clinicians to intervene sometimes hours sooner when a patient's condition began to deteriorate. "With the lab test ordering policy that this method developed, we were able to order labs to determine that the patient's health had degraded enough to need treatment, on average, four hours before the clinician actually initiated treatment based on clinician ordered labs," says Barbara Engelhardt, senior author of the study and associate professor of computer science at Princeton. In their study, researchers leveraged the MIMIC III database--which includes detailed medical records of 58,000 critical care admissions at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center--and selected a subset of 6,060 records of adults who were admitted to the ICU between 2001 and 2012.

While China is not the only authoritarian state in the world, it is the most powerful and technologically advanced, Soros said. "This makes [Chinese president] Xi Jinping the most dangerous opponent of open societies," he said.

Microsoft seeks to restrict abuse of its facial recognition AI
Microsoft is planning to implement self-designed ethical principles for its facial recognition technology by the end of March, as it urges governments to push ahead with matching regulation in the field. The company in December called for new legislation to govern artificial intelligence software for recognising faces, advocating for human review and oversight of the technology in some critical cases, as a way to mitigate the risks of biased outcomes, intrusions into privacy and democratic freedoms. "We do need to lead by example and we're working to do that," Microsoft President and chief legal officer Brad Smith said in an interview, adding that some other companies are also putting similar principles into place. Smith said the company plans by the end of March to "operationalise" its principles, which involves drafting policies, building governance systems and engineering tools and testing to make sure it's in line with its goals. It also involves setting controls for the company's global sales and consulting teams to prevent selling the technology in cases where it risks being used for an unwanted purpose.
