Chinese gaming giant grabs stake in 'Detroit' studio Quantic Dream

Engadget

China's NetEase may be struggling to get its games whitelisted in its native country, but that isn't stopping it from making waves in the wider gaming industry. The internet giant's gaming unit has acquired a minority stake in David Cage's studio Quantic Dream, best known for its cinematic PlayStation exclusives Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human, both of which incorporate interactive storytelling techniques and motion capture technology. According to NetEase, Quantic Dream will continue to operate independently under the leadership of its co-CEOs Cage and Guillaume de Fondaumiรจre. But the real benefit for the French studio will be an entry point into China, the world's biggest gaming market, where NetEase rules alongside rival Tencent. Despite the country's gaming freeze being lifted, the government's crackdown on titles that don't adhere to strict cultural guidelines (and contain sexual or violent content) could be a concern for Quantic and its adult-oriented games.

1 US Case Against Huawei Centers Around a Robot Called Tappy

U.S. News

One Huawei employee, identified in the indictment only as "R.Y," wrote in a January 2013 email to Huawei China that, "Once again, we CAN'T ask TMO any questions about the robot. TMO is VERY angry the questions that we asked. Sorry we can't deliver any more information to you." The employee suggested Huawei China send its own engineer to the Seattle lab.

FaceTime bug: Apple turns off iPhone group chat feature but full fix update not yet available

The Independent - Tech

Apple has switched off its group FaceTime feature after it emerged the feature could be used to snoop on people through their iPhone. The glitch let users simply call someone up and hear audio or see video through a person's iPhone, without them realising. Now the company has taken the feature offline in an attempt to stop it being abused. But a full fix won't be available until later this week, according to Apple. "Group FaceTime is temporarily unavailable," Apple's system status page reads.

How will AI impact the future of India?

#artificialintelligence

Just as he was parking his car inside his house, few people surrounded and shot him dead. It was all dark, and everything happened within a span of a few seconds. There was no witness and no weapons were left behind. With just grainy CCTV recording black and white footage the miscreants were never to be found again, or so they thought. Modern AI technologies were used to perform colorization (a process in which a black and white video/image is converted into color video/image), image super-resolution (a process where a small-sized image can be scaled to 8-16 times the original resolution) and facial 3D reconstruction (from fragments of few pixels of the faces caught in different frames from the original video).

Current state of AI according to Kai-Fu Lee

#artificialintelligence

No one knows the current state of artificial intelligence than the venture capitalist Kai-Fu Lee. He has so far funded 140 AI startups. These startups include ten unicorns and one decacorn. He is also called rightly, the Oracle of AI. He has recently written a new book "AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley and the New World Order" Many people have the wrong idea.

Why Europe Will Come Out on Top in the Tech Race Between the U.S. and China

#artificialintelligence

The tech race between China and the U.S. has reached a fever pitch in recent months. The two countries not only have the world's two most robust economies, they're also home to some of the world's most innovative companies. Google, Amazon, Apple and others have long been considered stalwarts in innovation and have changed the world with their technologies, while companies like Alibaba, Huawei and Tencent continually shift our attention to China. When it comes to tech, China has pulled ahead of the U.S. in many areas like artificial intelligence (AI) as well as in the number of investments made by its major tech companies. The U.S, meanwhile, is doing everything it can to regain the lead where it's lost ground and push further ahead where it's already leading.

How China is winning the AI race, one real-life application at a time nexxworks

#artificialintelligence

Andrew Ng has called it the "new electricity" while Google CEO Sundar Pichai even went beyond that: "artificial intelligence is going to have a bigger impact on the world than some of the most ubiquitous innovations in history", like electricity (sorry Andrewโ€ฆ) and even fire. So, I feel pretty confident to state that AI will lie at the basis of the (re-)development of business, and even society in general. If the world wide web built the substructure of the age of networks and disruption, then AI will drive the same type of revolution in the cognitive age. Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Alibaba, IBM: everyone is racing to get a piece of that very delectable and rich pie. But who will win the race?

How AI is revolutionising drug industry by cutting research time

#artificialintelligence

Insilico Medicine, named one of the world's top 20 artificial intelligence (AI) drug-development companies by Forbes Magazine, will move its headquarters from the United States to Hong Kong in April. The move from Baltimore to Hong Kong Science Park signals the importance the company places on the China market. Founded by Alex Zhavoronkov in 2014, the enterprise uses AI and deep learning โ€“ a subset of machine learning that imitates the workings of the human brain in processing data โ€“ for drug discovery and ageing research. Zhavoronkov's credentials are impressive: he has a master's degree in biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, a physics doctorate from Lomonosov Moscow State University, and is an adjunct professor at the Buck Institute for Research on Ageing in California. Zhavoronkov says AI can speed up and reduce costs for drug development which โ€“ involving several phases of clinical trials, government approval and licensing โ€“ can last more than a decade.

[Herald Interview] Rebranded SoftBank Ventures Asia to form new fund for AI startups in Asia

#artificialintelligence

Despite new direction, Korea remains a pivotal market for SoftBank's venture capital unit dedicated to funding early-stage tech startups, says CEO SoftBank Ventures Asia, which recently renamed itself to reflect its broadened focus on startups in the Asia-Pacific region beyond South Korea, will form a new investment fund dedicated to artificial intelligence startups in Asia with "globally disruptive" products and services this year. The venture capital arm of Japan's SoftBank Group plans to establish within the year a new global investment fund to back promising AI startups in Asian countries other than China, according to SoftBank Ventures Asia CEO JP Lee. "This new fund will look for globally disruptive startups with AI technologies and services in the Asia-Pacific (region), excluding China," Lee said in a recent interview with The Korea Herald in Seoul. As for China, a market that the Seoul-based SBVA is now prioritizing, the VC will continue investing through the $300 million China Venture Fund I launched last year in partnership with TPG Growth, a US-based private equity firm with a sizable presence in Asia.
