An Online Sample Based Method for Mode Estimation using ODE Analysis of Stochastic Approximation Algorithms

One of the popular measures of central tendency that provides better representation and interesting insights of the data compared to the other measures like mean and median is the metric mode. If the analytical form of the density function is known, mode is an argument of the maximum value of the density function and one can apply the optimization techniques to find mode. In many of the practical applications, the analytical form of the density is not known and only the samples from the distribution are available. Most of the techniques proposed in the literature for estimating the mode from the samples assume that all the samples are available beforehand. Moreover, some of the techniques employ computationally expensive operations like sorting. In this work we provide a computationally effective, on-line iterative algorithm that estimates the mode of a unimodal smooth density given only the samples generated from the density. Asymptotic convergence of the proposed algorithm using an ordinary differential equation (ODE) based analysis is provided. We also prove the stability of estimates by utilizing the concept of regularization. Experimental results further demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

A Japanese city is using AI to prevent youth suicides

According to a story in The Japan Times, the school will feed the AI information about 9,000 suspected bullying cases reported by Otsu's elementary and junior high schools between 2012 and 2018. This information will include details on the students involved -- their ages, genders, absenteeism records, and academic achievements -- as well as when and where any bullying incidents took place. "Through an AI theoretical analysis of past data, we will be able to properly respond to cases without just relying on teachers' past experiences," Otsu Mayor Naomi Koshi said, according to The Japan Times. The hope is that the AI will allow school officials to identify the bullying cases that are likely to escalate in seriousness so that they can intervene and diffuse the situation before it's too late. "Bullying may start from low-level friction in relationships, but can get worse day by day," an Otsu education board official said, according to The Japan Times.

A new app to track malnutrition in India using Microsoft's AI tech

Welthungerhilfe, one of Germany's largest private aid organisations, in collaboration with the India chapter of Action Against Hunger, has launched an app called Child Growth Monitor. The app uses Microsoft's Artificial Intelligence technology to monitor children's growth and levels of nutrition, and helps in fighting malnutrition. Child Growth Monitor has been launched as a pilot project in India. The app scans nearly 10,000 children under the age of five for signs of malnutrition. It is powered by Microsoft Azure and AI services.
