Google says it put hidden microphone in home alarm system and didn't tell customers

The Independent - Tech

Google has admitted to installing hidden microphones in a home product and not telling customers they were there. The company says it never meant to keep the listening devices a secret and they had only been left of the box because of an "error". The Nest Secure alarm system did not include the microphone as part of its specifications but it was "never intended to be a secret", parent company Google said. The hardware feature came to light after Google announced a software update to the Nest Secure system would enable it to use its voice-activated helper, Google Assistant, which is powered by artificial intelligence to answer queries and commands. Until then, the product web page for the device did not say it contained a microphone.

Top TED Talks on AI And Machine Learning: 2019 Edition

#artificialintelligence

Since its conceptualisation in 1983, TED Talks have been the go-to platform for people from all walks of life to share their idea and thoughts. Over the last three decades, the platform has witnessed some of the finest speakers capture the imagination of their audience with absolute exuberance. In this article, Analytics India Magazine takes a look at some of the most interesting talks that revolve around emerging tech like artificial intelligence and machine learning. Published in November 2018, Matt Beane, assistant professor of Technology Management at the University of California, addresses the most common fear associated with AI -- machines taking over human jobs. Beane, however, challenges this notion and says that instead of handling the technology carelessly and letting it be a hindrance for getting newer jobs, the potential of the technology can be used in such a way that machine enhanced mentorship to " take full advantage of AI's amazing capabilities while enhancing our skills at the same time."

NVIDIA AI on Healthcare

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. NVIDIA, this is a brand that most people around the world would be acustomed to, on our laptops and desktops, the NVIDIA graphics card, where we spent time playing games on our laptops/desktops or on our creative works for those in the creative industries such as photography, design etc. When I first heard of NVIDIA leading the world of healthcare with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and their hardware, I was surprised of NVIDIA's diversity, growth and expansion from the graphics card to their super computer and AI. Upon learning more when I visited NVIDIA website, I discovered so much more on NVIDIA beyond their graphics card. NVIDIA VP of Healthcare, Kimberly Powell, visited Singapore recently for EmTech Asia 2019.

#artificialintelligence

Newswire) Investorideas.com, a global investor news source covering Artificial Intelligence issues a special edition of The AI Eye, looking at the battle for dominance between the US and China. On February 11, President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Maintaining American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence. The document stresses the importance of AI in propelling the US economy and cites current American global leadership in terms of R&D and deployment of AI as justifications for ramping up federal government commitments to promote the technology. Though it is not explicitly mentioned in the document, many commentators felt that the growing rivalry with China in the AI space influenced the President's executive order. Rob Verger, writing for Popular Science, captured the impression of those commentators when he observed: "Competition with China is a big part of the subtext to this announcement..." Some US AI companies were quick to respond.

Xiaomi made its own version of the Google Home Hub

Engadget

At the Mi 9 launch event in China, Xiaomi has revealed that it's working on a smart home hub -- one with looks that might conjure up images of the Lenovo Smart Clock and the Google Home Hub. It's called the Xiao Ai Touchscreen Speaker Box, and while details are scant at the moment, the electronics maker dropped some details about it. Unfortunately, it's still not clear if it has Google Assistant and if it uses the same software as Google's and Lenovo's devices. But it has the power to control Xiaomi's smart products, including ACs, air purifier, lights, cameras and door bell monitors, using touch or voice commands. Since the device is also a clock, it will have a customizable clock face and an alarm function that can wake you up using either music or video, as well. You'll also be able to use its four-inch display to play video and show content from iQiyi, Sogou, Tencent's QQ services and Sina.

Should I Open-Source My Model? โ€“ Towards Data Science

#artificialintelligence

I have worked on the problem of open-sourcing Machine Learning versus sensitivity for a long time, especially in disaster response contexts: when is it right/wrong to release data or a model publicly? This article is a list of frequently asked questions, the answers that are best practice today, and some examples of where I have encountered them. The criticism of OpenAI's decision included how it limits the research community's ability to replicate the results, and how the action in itself contributes to media fear of AI that is hyperbolic right now. It was this tweet that first caught my eye. Anima Anandkumar has a lot of experience bridging the gap between research and practical applications of Machine Learning.
