IBM Watson's next mission is to tiptoe into HR, and hire the right person
India could emerge as the third-largest market in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region for IBM's artificial intelligence (AI)-powered workforce automation solution, launched in November last year. The Armonk-based software services giant expects large-sized and mid-sized enterprises from sectors such as banking, insurance and manufacturing to be among the first adopters of the solution. The solution, dubbed the Talent and Transformation suite of services, is one among several that have come out of IBM's global AI platform, Watson. "India is one of the largest markets for the solution in terms of opportunity after Australia and Singapore (in the APAC region)," Lula Mohanty, general manager for APAC at IBM Global Business Services, told TechCircle. "Only five per cent of chief executive officers (CEOs) think that they have embarked on a transformation journey, especially when it comes to human resources core functions and only 24% of CHROs (chief human resources officers) think that they have a lot of work to do in terms of improving their core functions. This is a positive change in terms of rising awareness in the country," she added.

Tencent Works with LinkDoc to Leverage Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Services
Recently, the China-based medical big data and artificial intelligence company LinkDoc Technology completed a RMB 1 billion Series D financing in the first half of 2018 and quickly became the focus of the industry. LinkDoc Technology is the first big data and AI startup for medical applications to receive the highest score in this area in a single round of financing. Machine learning and therapeutics 2.0: Avoiding hype, realizing potential
Clarifying the elements of an algorithm--and their distinctive impact--will be increasingly important if machine learning is to overcome skepticism among healthcare stakeholders. Machine learning algorithms must offer insights that are credible and aligned with the scientific or clinical consensus. An algorithm that fails to replicate established findings or counters the established body of evidence is more likely an indication of a methodological oversight or a data artifact than a truly novel insight. A pharmaceutical manufacturer recently described a scenario in which a machine learning algorithm concluded that reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol after a heart attack was not associated with cardiac outcomes. This finding does not change 20-plus years of established clinical science, but rather speaks to nuances in the data and analytic structure. Without such a context, machine learning could conclude that cigarette lighters cause lung cancer. This context is provided by domain-specific expertise. Its absence results in decisions that, while analytically sound, produce algorithms that are not likely to be adopted. For instance, a recent machine learning algorithm to predict cardiovascular events included "lack of data" as a key risk factor.12

They join a small-but-growing number of automated couriers trundling down the sidewalks of London, Beijing and other cities and communities worldwide.
