ONCE THOUGHT OF AS A NICHE TOY for early adopters, drones can now be found buzzing over parks, in select cities, and are even being increasingly used for video production as the popularity of aerial photography soars. However, drones aren't only for fun and entertainment, and the high-pitched hum of their spinning propellers could replace the wail of ambulance sirens for global citizens as drones are put to work for humanitarian purposes. In March of 2017, DJI, the manufacturers of the most popular commercial drones, published a report about drones' life-saving capabilities, citing cases in which drones manned by volunteers or bystanders were used in emergency situations like floods and avalanches, resulting in 59 life-saving rescues in China, Canada, the U.S., and Turkey. Given that it takes 25 people 35 hours to search one square mile for missing persons, compared to the 30 minutes it takes a drone to cover the same area, regardless of treacherous conditions on the ground, drones are uniquely suited for search and rescue, even when piloted by hobbyists. Based on the increasing trend of drone use in the last 10 months covered by the report, DJI estimated that drones would be directly responsible for saving at least one person per week in the future.

Chinese phone company Huawei has unveiled its own foldable phone, the latest bendy phone to hit the market. Its Mate X will take on the Samsung Galaxy Fold as well as a whole host of other foldable handsets. Manufacturers claim that the new phones – which include screens that can bend out, fold over and become twice as big, like a tablet – will allow people to combine a traditional phone and an iPad-sized screen all in one. The release comes at a controversial time for Huawei, which has been accused by countries around the world of being too close to the Chinese government. The phones are difficult to buy in some counties like the US, which has repeatedly said the phones are unsafe.

Naval technology is developing so rapidly that Australia's new $50 billion fleet of submarines may one day have to face deadly underwater drones, an expert has warned. Earlier this month, the federal government announced the signing of the Attack class submarine Strategic Partnering Agreement with French shipbuilder Naval Group. It will build 12 attack submarines to replace the Royal Australian Navy's ageing Collins class vessels, with the first one scheduled to be delivered in the early 2030s, the federal government said. But Russia has already provided a glimpse of underwater autonomous – or drone - weaponry. The Russian Ministry of Defence released testing footage of its'Poseidon' – a high-speed nuclear torpedo. Naval chiefs said the weapon is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads and will have a maximum speed of 200 km/h.

There are a number of types and styles of artificial intelligence, but there's a key difference between the branch of programming that looks for interesting solutions to pertinent problems, and the branch of science seeking to model and simulate the functions of the human brain. Neuromorphic computing, which includes the production and use of neural networks, deals with proving the efficacy of any concept of how the brain performs its functions -- not just reaching decisions, but memorizing information and even deducing facts. Both literally and practically, "neuromorphic" means "taking the form of the brain." The key word here is "form," mainly because so much of AI research deals with simulating, or at least mimicking, the function of the brain. The engineering of a neuromorphic device involves the development of components whose functions are analogous to parts of the brain, or at least to what such parts are believed to do.

Melike Altınışık Architects has unveiled plans for a Robot Science Museum in Seoul, which will be built using robotic construction techniques and drones. Robots will be used to construct the curving metal facade of the building in the South Korean capital, which the Seoul Metropolitan Government has commissioned to educate the public about robots. Parts of the structure will be moulded, welded, assembled and polished by robots. Robots will also be used to 3D-print the concrete landscaping around the museum. Drones will be used for mapping, site inspections and to control robotic construction vehicles.
