Tesla Model Y: Elon Musk reveals launch date for new model
Tesla will unveil a brand new electric utility vehicle later this month, Elon Musk has revealed. The Tesla CEO took to Twitter to announce the launch date of the Model Y, as well as new details about the vehicle. "Model Y unveil event on March 14 at LA Design Studio," he tweeted. "Model Y, being an SUV, is about 10 per cent bigger than Model 3, so will cost about 10 per cent more and have slightly less range for same battery... Detailed specs and pricing will be provided, as well as test rides in Y." Mr Musk had previously joked that the Model Y would be unveiled on 15 March because "the Ides of March sounded good", while Chinese media has speculated the event would take place at the Shanghai Auto Show in April. His posts generated thousands of replies from electric vehicle enthusiasts excited by the new product category, though Mr Musk suggested the launch event for the Tesla Truck later this year will be more groundbreaking.

China's quest for AI glory leads to 400 new university majors in big data, AI - Study International
The Asian superpower is cementing its position as the world leader in big data, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, as its government announces plans to unleash a massive number of university majors in this field. Its universities will offer around 400 new majors related to these emerging technologies, as well as 612 new engineering research projects, China's Ministry of Education (MOE) announced last week, as reported by the People's Daily Online. "AI and big data are newly established majors and will be taught in some directions like computer application technology, information and communication, control science and engineering," Fan Hailin, Deputy Director of MOE's Department of Higher Education said. The new courses show China's ambitions for global leadership in two areas: AI and higher education. Analysts predict it will probably win the former, as the US shows no signs of national technology investment strategies that could compete with China's.
Blind Japanese inventor harnessing technology to improve lives of visually impaired
LONDON - Dr. Chieko Asakawa's life motto: Make the impossible possible -- by never giving up. Blind since the age of 14, Asakawa has dedicated the past three decades to researching and developing new technologies to help transform the lives of the visually impaired. Asakawa's inventions have impacted millions worldwide and now one of them will receive one of the ultimate in industry accolades. The Osaka-born computer scientist, who lives in the United States, is among 19 innovators who will be inducted into the U.S. National Inventors Hall of Fame in Washington in May. "It is a great honor to be recognized, one that is unexpected and a wonderful surprise," said Asakawa, an IBM distinguished service professor at Carnegie Mellon University's Robotic Institute in Pittsburgh.
Adopt AI or lose competitive edge, warns Oracle chief
Businesses across the GCC must embrace artificial intelligence technology or risk losing out to competitors, according to Oracle's senior vice president for the region, Andrew Sutherland. Speaking on the sidelines of the Oracle OpenWorld event at the Dubai World Trade Centre yesterday (Tuesday), Sutherland argued that the maxim'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' no longer applies for companies due to the emergence of new efficiency-driving technologies, which will give first movers a distinct advantage over those who are slow to adopt. "I am strongly of the opinion now that artificial intelligence (AI) in general, and autonomous databases in particular, are an inevitability," he told reporters. "This is not just airlines or card processing companies. Even a modest-sized organisation will need to handle more and more data and will want to spend more and more time getting value from that data – not administering it. LED goggles convert speech to text for hearing impaired
Creating a fruitful and encouraging environment for young minds is a serious business and thanks to Turkey's 2023 Education Vision, students from all over the country are bringing out the scientists and inventors that lay inside of them. Believing that they can do good for society with their inventions, two high school students from Düzce created special goggles for the hearing impaired which turns speech into text. Düzce Science and Art Center (BİLSEM) students Ömer Berkay Biçen and Dağhan Akyürek rolled up their sleeves to make life easier for the hearing impaired and came up with light-emitting diode (LED) goggles which transfer spoken language into text. Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), the project supervisor Adem Akkuş said the students from the Science and Art Center compete in national and international competitions with the projects they created. "I really liked the idea of helping the hearing impaired citizens in society. I helped the students while developing their project. These goggles are the product of intense work and determination. Our aim is to turn the project into a more practical device," he added.

Artificial intelligence research group OpenAI last month made the unusual announcement: It had built an AI-powered content creation engine so sophisticated that it wouldn't release the full model to developers. Anyone who works in cybersecurity immediately knew why. Phishing emails, which try to trick recipients into clicking malicious links, originated 91 percent of all cyberattacks in 2016, according to a study by Cofense Inc. Combining software bots to scrape personal information from social networks and public databases with such a powerful content generation engine could produce much more persuasive phishing emails that might even mimic a certain person's writing style, said Nicolas Kseib, lead data scientist at TruSTAR Technology LLC. The potential result: Cybercriminals could launch phishing attacks much faster and on an unprecedented scale. That danger neatly sums up the never-ending war that is the state of cybersecurity today, one in which no one can yet answer a central question: Will artificial intelligence provide more help to criminals or to the people trying to stop them?
