The obscure firm making iPhones better: Japan's Lasertec masters extreme ultraviolet lithography

After two decades in development, chipmakers are making a costly bet on a technology that will cram even more transistors onto silicon. Their success may hinge on a little-known company in Yokohama. Lasertec Corp. is the world's sole maker of equipment that tests glass squares slightly bigger than a CD case that act as a stencil for chip designs. By shining light through the squares, circuits smaller than the width of a few strands of DNA are imprinted onto silicon wafers in a process called lithography. These templates have to be perfect: Even a tiny defect can make every single chip in the batch unusable.


Insurance cos bet big on drones - Times of India

Hyderabad: The general insurance industry that has been deploying several tech tools to improve service delivery, is now betting big usage of drone technologies to speed up the process of risk assessment, monitoring, damage assessment and record keeping, among others to bring in efficiencies. Sanjay Datta, chief (underwriting and claims), ICICI Lombard General Insurance, pointed out that as insurance regulator IRDAI moots changes in norms for surveyors to ensure speedy settlement, the usage of emerging technologies such as drones can reduce claim settlement time. Datta explained that drone technologies can be used in instances where insurance companies' personnel either find a location very difficult or risky to access. Besides, if there is a higher cost involved in sending staff to a location, especially in cases where choppers need to be pressed into services (like in the case of natural disasters), drones can be a better option. "The biggest advantage is that drones are able to capture images in a standardised manner that human beings cannot. One can analyse and act accordingly based on the images," he said.

Microsoft launches AI business school to help companies improve decision-making

San Francisco: Microsoft on Monday announced a business school in Artificial Intelligence (AI) that will help companies improve decision-making in integrating AI across their operations. INSEAD, a graduate business school with campuses in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, partnered with Microsoft to build the AI Business School's strategy module, which includes case studies about companies across many industries that have successfully transformed their businesses with AI, the company said in a statement. A series of short introductory videos provide an overview of the AI technologies driving change across industries, but the bulk of the content focuses on managing the impact of AI on company strategy, culture and responsibility, the company said in a statement. "There is a gap between what people want to do and the reality of what is going on in their organisations today, and the reality of whether their organisation is ready," said Mitra Azizirad, Corporate Vice President for AI marketing at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington. "This school is a deep dive into how you develop a strategy and identify blockers before they happen in the implementation of AI in your organisation," she added.


AI will only succeed when people learn to trust it

According to a recent report from TNW, China is set to outpace America in artificial intelligence research spending by the end of this year. But there's a big hurdle that the worldwide leader in AI -- whoever that is -- will have to jump first. Before AI takes over the world, it will have to win the hearts and minds of consumers. In fact, according to new market research from Microsoft on how AI will change leadership, these high-growth companies are more than twice as likely to be actively implementing AI as lower-growth companies. What's more, high-growth companies are further along in their AI deployments, with about half planning to use more AI in the coming year to improve decision making compared to about a third of lower growth companies. Still, less than two in 10 of even high-growth companies are integrating AI across their operations, the research found. Artificial Intelligence India: NASSCOM forum hears about impact of AI

The IT industry body NASSCOM's annual Technology and Leadership Forum (NTLF) brought together industry captains to discuss a number of key themes, including the impact of artificial intelligence (AI). NASSCOM 2019 was held in Mumbai over three days in February with the NTLF itself gathering leaders with expertise in AI, automation, cloud computing, big data and cybersecurity. Indian IT service providers agreed they are well-positioned to help enterprises embrace digital transformation saying it is not only about finding the right technology, curating large amounts of data, or identifying the best use cases. Successful AI depends on changing business processes. While business leaders often focus on the change that needs to take place at the enterprise, more needs to be asked about the changes that IT services providers need to make in order to better serve their customers.


Adaptive Sample-Efficient Blackbox Optimization via ES-active Subspaces

We present a new algorithm ASEBO for conducting optimization of high-dimensional blackbox functions. ASEBO adapts to the geometry of the function and learns optimal sets of sensing directions, which are used to probe it, on-the-fly. It addresses the exploration-exploitation trade-off of blackbox optimization, where each single function query is expensive, by continuously learning the bias of the lower-dimensional model used to approximate gradients of smoothings of the function with compressed sensing and contextual bandits methods. To obtain this model, it uses techniques from the emerging theory of active subspaces in the novel ES blackbox optimization context. As a result, ASEBO learns the dynamically changing intrinsic dimensionality of the gradient space and adapts to the hardness of different stages of the optimization without external supervision. Consequently, it leads to more sample-efficient blackbox optimization than state-of-the-art algorithms. We provide rigorous theoretical justification of the effectiveness of our method. We also empirically evaluate it on the set of reinforcement learning policy optimization tasks as well as functions from the recently open-sourced Nevergrad library, demonstrating that it consistently learns optimal inputs with fewer queries to a blackbox function than other methods.
