Meteorological Agency starts development of AI-based system to predict windy events in Japan

The Meteorological Agency's research arm recently began developing an artificial intelligence-based system to predict high-wind events severe enough to impact the safety of land and air transportation, officials said. The system, which the Meteorological Research Institute aims to develop over a period of four years, is also expected to help self-driving cars avoid accidents caused by strong wind, including tornados and downbursts. Major wind systems develop quickly and their random nature has made it difficult to forecast their potential severity or location. East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) has been operating its own system to detect possible gusts following a derailment caused by strong winds in 2005, but its application has been limited. By monitoring air current data obtained from weather radar, the Meteorological Research Institute's prototype system has been able to detect the formation of high wind events with 90 percent accuracy, the officials said.

In fact, a Webroot report found that 74% of businesses across the US and Japan have already done so in 2017. ML and AI could be crucial technologies in the future prevention of cyberattacks. However, a recent report found that 87% of researchers believe that it would take longer than three years before they can trust AI to lead cybersecurity decisions. According to Webroot, 73% of organisations plan to use even more AI and ML tools in 2019.


CBSE adds yoga, artificial intelligence to curriculum

To enhance the multi-disciplinary approach among students, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to introduce artificial intelligence (AI), early childhood care education and yoga as new subjects in the school curriculum from the 2019-2020 session onward. Highlighting the importance of the AI, a circular by the board reads: "Artificial intelligence (AI) is being widely recognised to be the power which will fuel the future global digital economy. India's AI strategy identifies the AI as an opportunity and solution for inclusive economic growth and social development." However, if a candidate desires to reappear in a subject, he/she may do it during the compartment exams. Recently, the board had also integrated art with the teaching and learning process for all academic subjects from Classes I to XII to promote active and experiential learning. The detailed guidelines on it will be released shortly by the board.

A visually based artificial intelligence (AI) technology developed by South Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) will be deployed on CCTV cameras for detecting and preventing crimes. The AI technology Deep View, developed by ETRI, is applied to the precise recognition of human behavior based on analysis of joints of the human body in CCTV images. The technology precisely tracks movements of people placing down or throwing objects, as well as physical indications of such crimes as illegally throwing away garbage. Applying this technology in the future will proactively detect and prevent crimes and incidents in city areas. So far, there has been much difficulty in recognizing actions appearing in CCTVs, as studies on action comprehension used widely accessible online data such as YouTube videos.


Tokyo's Olympics may become known as the 'Robot Games'

Tokyo's Olympics may become known as the "Robot Games." Organizers on Friday showed off robots that will be used at the new National Stadium to provide assistance for fans using wheelchairs. Tokyo Olympic official Masaaki Komiya pointed out that Japan is known for its robot technology, and the 2020 Summer Games are a good place to show off. "Robots should not overwhelm people," Komiya, the vice director general to the Tokyo Olympics, told a news conference. "Robots are something that have an amicable relationship with human beings and can work together. That's the kind of robots we envision."


20-year AI research roadmap calls for lifetime assistants and national labs

The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) has released a draft version of its 20-year roadmap for AI research in the United States. Made after consultation with researchers and tech companies, the roadmap calls for sustained support from the federal government and prescribes a number of steps to ensure the U.S. retains its position as a nation with some of the most advanced AI resources on the planet. The roadmap also supports the development of lifelong personal assistants to augment human ability in education, health care, and industry. According to the roadmap: "… lifelong personal assistants will enable an elderly population to live longer independently, AI health coaches will provide advice for lifestyle choices, customized AI tutors will broaden education opportunities, and AI scientific assistants will dramatically accelerate the pace of discovery." Organizers believe such efforts could promote universal personalized education, accelerate scientific discovery, and drive business innovation.
