Last week, I, alongside my colleague Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee Chair Steve Englebright, held the first-ever NYS Assembly roundtable on artificial intelligence and how we can utilize it to predict and combat climate change. We head into our last three intensive legislative weeks with June with a few thousand bills pending – though only a fraction will end up passing both bodies. Serious work continues and a whole host of important yet controversial bills including on housing and tenant protections, climate control and protection, surrogacy laws and driver licenses to name just a few! The future of deliveries may be robo-vans. A Chinese startup called Neolix kicked off mass production of its self-driving delivery vehicles Friday -- saying it's the first company globally to do so -- and has lined up giants such as JD.Com Inc. and Huawei Technologies Co. as customers. Neolix expects to deliver a thousand of the vehicles, which resemble tiny vans, within the first year as it broadens out. The implications are potentially huge: Billionaire Jack Ma predicts there will be 1 billion deliveries a day in China within a decade and the commercialization of the technology could provide lessons for autonomous vehicles carrying passengers. Neolix isn't alone in this space as Silicon Valley's Nuro raised almost a billion dollars this year and is starting to deliver groceries in Arizona.

The government is considering having hospitals introduce a facial recognition system to identify patients using My Number tax and social security identification cards as health insurance cards, sources have said. The move is designed to help prevent the fraudulent use of My Number cards and promote the spread of online procedures for public services. The use of My Number cards as health insurance cards at hospitals will become possible as early as March 2021 as the Diet passed related legislation last month. But such use is raising concerns among hospitals about potential problems that could arise if hospital staff accept My Number cards from patients for identification purposes. The government is considering having patients themselves take care of the identification procedures for the cards. Some companies, including NEC Corp. and Panasonic Corp., already sell facial recognition systems.

YOKOHAMA - A probe was launched Sunday into an accident involving an automated train the previous night in Yokohama which left 14 hurt, including six with serious injuries. Officials from the Japan Transport Safety Board began examining the train cars at Shin-Sugita Station on the Kanazawa Seaside Line. Investigators are considering a charge of professional negligence resulting in injuries, police sources said. At 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, an automated train operated by Yokohama Seaside Line Co. traveled in the wrong direction for about 25 meters at a speed of 6 kph. The train had been set to depart the station but instead moved backward and crashed into a buffer at Shin-Sugita Station.
