A mechanic who gave a car a fraudulent MOT just weeks before it was involved in a fatal crash that killed three people has been given a 12-month community order. Neil John Lewis, 47, from Cardiff, had previously pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation . Eve Smith, 21, Darcy Ross, 21, and Rafel Jeanne, 24, died when the car crashed into woodland in St Mellons, Cardiff, in March 2023. They lay undiscovered for two days. Cardiff Magistrates' Court heard Lewis had owned G and J Motors for 21 years and had voluntarily surrendered his testing certificate following the incident.

Wayfair is among three firms which have been fined £6m in total by the competition watchdog for illegally using misleading sales tactics - with some customers set to receive refunds. The online furniture retailer was fined £4.8m for misleading customers with time-limited offers, while online electronics seller Appliances Direct was fined £1.2m for the same practice, the Competition Markets Authority (CMA) said. Meanwhile, Gold's Gym has been fined £48,000 by the CMA for not telling customers the total price of memberships. Appliances Direct and Gold's Gym have been ordered to refund customers a total of £440,000. The BBC has contacted the three companies for comment. Thousands of Appliances Direct customers will receive refunds of £25 each on average while 726 Gold's Gym customers will get refunds of up to £50, according to the CMA.
