Health Misinformation in Social Networks: A Survey of IT Approaches

The spread of misinformation online, most commonly known as fake news, is an important issue that has become more pronounced in the last two decades due to the prevalence of social media. Platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook, have been commonly identified as the main channels for propagating misinformation and have been criticized for not acting on addressing the conditions that permit the circulation and amplification of false information [32]. Such misinformation includes false claims and non fact-checked news items, that originate from sources of questionable credibility [113]. The problem of misinformation becomes critical when it pertains to healthcare and health issues, since it puts lives and the public health at risk. One of the first cases of widely spread misinformation in the medical domain is the falsehood that the MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) causes autism [109]. The falsehood originated from a fraudulent article titled "Ileal-lymphoid-nodular hyperplasia, non-specific colitis, and pervasive developmental disorder in children" published in the prestigious Lancet journal in 1998 [171, 197]. This study turned tens of thousands of parents against the vaccine, and as a result, in 2020, many countries, including the United Kingdom, Greece, Venezuela, and Brazil, lost their measles elimination status. In 2020, twenty-two years after publishing this study Lancet retracted the paper [203].


Multi-Dialect Vietnamese: Task, Dataset, Baseline Models and Challenges

Vietnamese, a low-resource language, is typically categorized into three primary dialect groups that belong to Northern, Central, and Southern Vietnam. However, each province within these regions exhibits its own distinct pronunciation variations. Despite the existence of various speech recognition datasets, none of them has provided a fine-grained classification of the 63 dialects specific to individual provinces of Vietnam. To address this gap, we introduce Vietnamese Multi-Dialect (ViMD) dataset, a novel comprehensive dataset capturing the rich diversity of 63 provincial dialects spoken across Vietnam. Our dataset comprises 102.56 hours of audio, consisting of approximately 19,000 utterances, and the associated transcripts contain over 1.2 million words. To provide benchmarks and simultaneously demonstrate the challenges of our dataset, we fine-tune state-of-the-art pre-trained models for two downstream tasks: (1) Dialect identification and (2) Speech recognition. The empirical results suggest two implications including the influence of geographical factors on dialects, and the constraints of current approaches in speech recognition tasks involving multi-dialect speech data. Our dataset is available for research purposes.


An Evolutionary Algorithm For the Vehicle Routing Problem with Drones with Interceptions

The use of trucks and drones as a solution to address last-mile delivery challenges is a new and promising research direction explored in this paper. The variation of the problem where the drone can intercept the truck while in movement or at the customer location is part of an optimisation problem called the vehicle routing problem with drones with interception (VRPDi). This paper proposes an evolutionary algorithm to solve the VRPDi. In this variation of the VRPDi, multiple pairs of trucks and drones need to be scheduled. The pairs leave and return to a depot location together or separately to make deliveries to customer nodes. The drone can intercept the truck after the delivery or meet up with the truck at the following customer location. The algorithm was executed on the travelling salesman problem with drones (TSPD) datasets by Bouman et al. (2015), and the performance of the algorithm was compared by benchmarking the results of the VRPDi against the results of the VRP of the same dataset. This comparison showed improvements in total delivery time between 39% and 60%. Further detailed analysis of the algorithm results examined the total delivery time, distance, node delivery scheduling and the degree of diversity during the algorithm execution. This analysis also considered how the algorithm handled the VRPDi constraints. The results of the algorithm were then benchmarked against algorithms in Dillon et al. (2023) and Ernst (2024). The latter solved the problem with a maximum drone distance constraint added to the VRPDi. The analysis and benchmarking of the algorithm results showed that the algorithm satisfactorily solved 50 and 100-nodes problems in a reasonable amount of time, and the solutions found were better than those found by the algorithms in Dillon et al. (2023) and Ernst (2024) for the same problems.


Diffusion-Based Visual Art Creation: A Survey and New Perspectives

The integration of generative AI in visual art has revolutionized not only how visual content is created but also how AI interacts with and reflects the underlying domain knowledge. This survey explores the emerging realm of diffusion-based visual art creation, examining its development from both artistic and technical perspectives. We structure the survey into three phases, data feature and framework identification, detailed analyses using a structured coding process, and open-ended prospective outlooks. Our findings reveal how artistic requirements are transformed into technical challenges and highlight the design and application of diffusion-based methods within visual art creation. We also provide insights into future directions from technical and synergistic perspectives, suggesting that the confluence of generative AI and art has shifted the creative paradigm and opened up new possibilities. By summarizing the development and trends of this emerging interdisciplinary area, we aim to shed light on the mechanisms through which AI systems emulate and possibly, enhance human capacities in artistic perception and creativity.


A Survey of Generative Techniques for Spatial-Temporal Data Mining

This paper focuses on the integration of generative techniques into spatial-temporal data mining, considering the significant growth and diverse nature of spatial-temporal data. With the advancements in RNNs, CNNs, and other non-generative techniques, researchers have explored their application in capturing temporal and spatial dependencies within spatial-temporal data. However, the emergence of generative techniques such as LLMs, SSL, Seq2Seq and diffusion models has opened up new possibilities for enhancing spatial-temporal data mining further. The paper provides a comprehensive analysis of generative technique-based spatial-temporal methods and introduces a standardized framework specifically designed for the spatial-temporal data mining pipeline. By offering a detailed review and a novel taxonomy of spatial-temporal methodology utilizing generative techniques, the paper enables a deeper understanding of the various techniques employed in this field. Furthermore, the paper highlights promising future research directions, urging researchers to delve deeper into spatial-temporal data mining. It emphasizes the need to explore untapped opportunities and push the boundaries of knowledge to unlock new insights and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of spatial-temporal data mining. By integrating generative techniques and providing a standardized framework, the paper contributes to advancing the field and encourages researchers to explore the vast potential of generative techniques in spatial-temporal data mining.


New Benchmark Dataset and Fine-Grained Cross-Modal Fusion Framework for Vietnamese Multimodal Aspect-Category Sentiment Analysis

The emergence of multimodal data on social media platforms presents new opportunities to better understand user sentiments toward a given aspect. However, existing multimodal datasets for Aspect-Category Sentiment Analysis (ACSA) often focus on textual annotations, neglecting fine-grained information in images. Consequently, these datasets fail to fully exploit the richness inherent in multimodal. To address this, we introduce a new Vietnamese multimodal dataset, named ViMACSA, which consists of 4,876 text-image pairs with 14,618 fine-grained annotations for both text and image in the hotel domain. Additionally, we propose a Fine-Grained Cross-Modal Fusion Framework (FCMF) that effectively learns both intra- and inter-modality interactions and then fuses these information to produce a unified multimodal representation. Experimental results show that our framework outperforms SOTA models on the ViMACSA dataset, achieving the highest F1 score of 79.73%. We also explore characteristics and challenges in Vietnamese multimodal sentiment analysis, including misspellings, abbreviations, and the complexities of the Vietnamese language. This work contributes both a benchmark dataset and a new framework that leverages fine-grained multimodal information to improve multimodal aspect-category sentiment analysis. Skin Cancer Segmentation and Classification Using Vision Transformer for Automatic Analysis in Dermatoscopy-based Non-invasive Digital System

The development of cancer is triggered by alterations and mutations in the DNA. The majority of DNA changes responsible for cancer occur within specific regions known as genes. Among the various types of cancers, skin cancer is among the five on the list. If we disregard breast and prostate cancer which are gender-dependent, skin cancer will remain in the third largest cancer category among many others. Based on the statistics released by the American Cancer Society (ACS) [1], there were 58,120 recorded cases of skin cancer among males and 39,490 cases among females. An intriguing observation is that the incidence of skin cancer has been steadily rising from 1992 to 2019, with a notable exception in 2020 [2]. This exception can be attributed to the understandable decrease in cases during the COVID-19 pandemic, as people were mostly confined to their homes. This decline is reasonable considering that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a significant contributing factor to the development of skin cancer. More people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined [3].


Constrained Twin Variational Auto-Encoder for Intrusion Detection in IoT Systems

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) play a critical role in protecting billions of IoT devices from malicious attacks. However, the IDSs for IoT devices face inherent challenges of IoT systems, including the heterogeneity of IoT data/devices, the high dimensionality of training data, and the imbalanced data. Moreover, the deployment of IDSs on IoT systems is challenging, and sometimes impossible, due to the limited resources such as memory/storage and computing capability of typical IoT devices. To tackle these challenges, this article proposes a novel deep neural network/architecture called Constrained Twin Variational Auto-Encoder (CTVAE) that can feed classifiers of IDSs with more separable/distinguishable and lower-dimensional representation data. Additionally, in comparison to the state-of-the-art neural networks used in IDSs, CTVAE requires less memory/storage and computing power, hence making it more suitable for IoT IDS systems. Extensive experiments with the 11 most popular IoT botnet datasets show that CTVAE can boost around 1% in terms of accuracy and Fscore in detection attack compared to the state-of-the-art machine learning and representation learning methods, whilst the running time for attack detection is lower than 2E-6 seconds and the model size is lower than 1 MB. We also further investigate various characteristics of CTVAE in the latent space and in the reconstruction representation to demonstrate its efficacy compared with current well-known methods.


Inverse Ising inference from high-temperature re-weighting of observations

Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) is the bread and butter of system inference for stochastic systems. In some generality, MLE will converge to the correct model in the infinite data limit. In the context of physical approaches to system inference, such as Boltzmann machines, MLE requires the arduous computation of partition functions summing over all configurations, both observed and unobserved. We present here a conceptually and computationally transparent data-driven approach to system inference that is based on the simple question: How should the Boltzmann weights of observed configurations be modified to make the probability distribution of observed configurations close to a flat distribution? This algorithm gives accurate inference by using only observed configurations for systems with a large number of degrees of freedom where other approaches are intractable.


Automatic Language Identification in Texts: A Survey

Language identification ("LI") is the problem of determining the natural language that a document or part thereof is written in. Automatic LI has been extensively researched for over fifty years. Today, LI is a key part of many text processing pipelines, as text processing techniques generally assume that the language of the input text is known. Research in this area has recently been especially active. This article provides a brief history of LI research, and an extensive survey of the features and methods used in the LI literature. We describe the features and methods using a unified notation, to make the relationships between methods clearer. We discuss evaluation methods, applications of LI, as well as off-the-shelf LI systems that do not require training by the end user. Finally, we identify open issues, survey the work to date on each issue, and propose future directions for research in LI.
