GroundHog: Revolutionizing GLDAS Groundwater Storage Downscaling for Enhanced Recharge Estimation in Bangladesh

Long-term groundwater level (GWL) measurement is vital for effective policymaking and recharge estimation using annual maxima and minima. However, current methods prioritize short-term predictions and lack multi-year applicability, limiting their utility. Moreover, sparse in-situ measurements lead to reliance on low-resolution satellite data like GLDAS as the ground truth for Machine Learning models, further constraining accuracy. To overcome these challenges, we first develop an ML model to mitigate data gaps, achieving $R^2$ scores of 0.855 and 0.963 for maximum and minimum GWL predictions, respectively. Subsequently, using these predictions and well observations as ground truth, we train an Upsampling Model that uses low-resolution (25 km) GLDAS data as input to produce high-resolution (2 km) GWLs, achieving an excellent $R^2$ score of 0.96. Our approach successfully upscales GLDAS data for 2003-2024, allowing high-resolution recharge estimations and revealing critical trends for proactive resource management. Our method allows upsampling of groundwater storage (GWS) from GLDAS to high-resolution GWLs for any points independently of officially curated piezometer data, making it a valuable tool for decision-making.


Developing a Thailand solar irradiance map using Himawari-8 satellite imageries and deep learning models

Thailand has targeted to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 when the power grid will need to accommodate 50% share of renewable electricity generation capacity; see [Ene21]. The most recent draft of Power Development Plan 2024 (PDP2024) for 2024 - 2037 from [Ene24] proposes to add a new solar generation capacity of approximately 24,400 MWp (more than 4 times the amount issued in the previous Alternative Energy Development Plan 2015-2036 (AEDP2015) at 6,000 MWp, shown in [Dep15, p.9]. This amount does not yet include behind-the-meter, self-generation solar installed capacities of the prosumers, which is expected to increase at an accelerating rate. Solar integration into the power grid with such a sharprising amount will pose technical challenges to the operation and control of the transmission and distribution networks, carried out by the transmission system operator (TSO) and distribution system operator (DSO), as presented in [OB16]. Hence, TSO in Thailand will need an effective means to estimate the solar power generation across the entire transmission network, on an hourly basis, or even finer time resolution, to provide economic hour-to-hour generation dispatch for load following the total net load of the transmission, and to prepare sufficient system flexibility (i.e., ramp-rate capability of the thermal and hydropower plants, or energy storage systems) to cope with the net load fluctuation due to solar generation intermittency for maintaining system frequency stability, concurrently, in its operation. For DSO, a significant amount of reverse power flow when self-generation from solar exceeds self-consumption can lead to technical concerns of voltage regulation and equipment overloading problems. The near real-time estimation of solar generation in each distribution area will enable DSO to activate proper network switching or reconfiguring to mitigate such fundamental concerns to ensure its reliable operation.


EU universal income must be 'seriously considered' as rise of robots threatens mass unemployment, say MEPs

MEPs have warned European countries must "seriously" consider introducing a general basic income to prepare for wide scale unemployment that could come as a result of robots taking over manual jobs. A draft report, tabled by a socialist MEP Mady Delvaux-Stehres, warns preparations must be made for what it describes as the "technological revolution" currently taking place, including provisions for the "possible effects on the labour market of robotics". The report, which passed by 17 votes to two and will be put in front of the entire European Parliament in February, urges member states to consider a general basic income in preparation for robots taking over people's jobs. It states: "In the light of the possible effects on the labour market of robotics and AI a general basic income should be seriously considered, and invites all Member States to do so." The resolution also suggests that a system of reporting on how robotics are affecting the economic results of companies should be established "for the purpose of taxation and social security contributions".


Enhancements of Multi-class Support Vector Machine Construction from Binary Learners using Generalization Performance

We propose several novel methods for enhancing the multi-class SVMs by applying the generalization performance of binary classifiers as the core idea. This concept will be applied on the existing algorithms, i.e., the Decision Directed Acyclic Graph (DDAG), the Adaptive Directed Acyclic Graphs (ADAG), and Max Wins. Although in the previous approaches there have been many attempts to use some information such as the margin size and the number of support vectors as performance estimators for binary SVMs, they may not accurately reflect the actual performance of the binary SVMs. We show that the generalization ability evaluated via a cross-validation mechanism is more suitable to directly extract the actual performance of binary SVMs. Our methods are built around this performance measure, and each of them is crafted to overcome the weakness of the previous algorithm. The proposed methods include the Reordering Adaptive Directed Acyclic Graph (RADAG), Strong Elimination of the classifiers (SE), Weak Elimination of the classifiers (WE), and Voting based Candidate Filtering (VCF). Experimental results demonstrate that our methods give significantly higher accuracy than all of the traditional ones. Especially, WE provides significantly superior results compared to Max Wins which is recognized as the state of the art algorithm in terms of both accuracy and classification speed with two times faster in average. Introduction The support vector machine (SVM) [1, 2] is a high performance learning algorithm constructing a hyperplane to separate two-class data by maximizing the margin between them. There are two approaches for extending SVMs to multi-class problems, i.e., solving the problem by formulating all classes of data under a single optimization, and combining several two-class subproblems. However, the difficulty and complexity to solve the problem with the first method are due to the increase of the number of classes and the size of training data, so the second method is more suitable for practical use. In this paper, we focus on the second approach. For constructing a multi-class classifier from binary ones, the method called one-against-one trains each binary classifier on only two out ofN classes, and builds N (N 1)/ 2 possible classifiers. Several strategies have been proposed for combining the trained classifiers to make the final classification for an unseen data. Friedman [3] suggested the combination strategy called Max Wins .
