LINGOLY-TOO: Disentangling Memorisation from Reasoning with Linguistic Templatisation and Orthographic Obfuscation

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Assessing the reasoning capabilities of large language models (LLMs) is susceptible to overestimation due to data exposure of evaluation benchmarks. We introduce a framework for producing linguistic reasoning problems that reduces the effect of memorisation in model performance estimates and apply this framework to develop LINGOLY-TOO, a challenging benchmark for linguistic reasoning. By developing orthographic templates, we dynamically obfuscate the writing systems of real languages to generate numerousquestion variations. These variations preserve the reasoning steps required for each solution while reducing the likelihood of specific problem instances appearing in model training data. Our experiments demonstrate that frontier models, including Claud 3.7 Sonnet, o1-preview and DeepSeek R1, struggle with advanced reasoning. Our analysis also shows that LLMs exhibit noticeable variance in accuracy across permutations of the same problem, and on average perform better on questions appearing in their original orthography. Our findings highlight the opaque nature of response generation in LLMs and provide evidence that prior data exposure contributes to over estimating the reasoning capabilities of frontier models.

Statistical Scenario Modelling and Lookalike Distributions for Multi-Variate AI Risk

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Evaluating AI safety requires statistically rigorous methods and risk metrics for understanding how the use of AI affects aggregated risk. However, much AI safety literature focuses upon risks arising from AI models in isolation, lacking consideration of how modular use of AI affects risk distribution of workflow components or overall risk metrics. There is also a lack of statistical grounding enabling sensitisation of risk models in the presence of absence of AI to estimate causal contributions of AI. This is in part due to the dearth of AI impact data upon which to fit distributions. In this work, we address these gaps in two ways. First, we demonstrate how scenario modelling (grounded in established statistical techniques such as Markov chains, copulas and Monte Carlo simulation) can be used to model AI risk holistically. Second, we show how lookalike distributions from phenomena analogous to AI can be used to estimate AI impacts in the absence of directly observable data. We demonstrate the utility of our methods for benchmarking cumulative AI risk via risk analysis of a logistic scenario simulations.

'Star Trek shield' technology gets 250M boost to knock drone swarms from the sky with high-powered microwave

FOX News

Animation shows traditional counter-drone technology vs. Epirus' Leonidas system that can take out entire swarms of drones at once. A new high-powered microwave system that can knock swarms of drones out of the sky at once is going to "touch every aspect of warfare," according to Epirus founder, Joe Lonsdale. "It's kind of like a Star Trek shield," Lonsdale, founder of Epirus and a co-founder of fast-rising defense technology company Palantir, explained of its Leonidas counter-drone system. "It's able to turn them off from very far away." "This is going to touch every aspect of warfare over the next decade," said Lonsdale.

The Download: Denmark's robot city, and Google's AI-only search results

MIT Technology Review

Africa is still early in the process of adopting AI technologies. But researchers say the continent is uniquely hospitable to it for several reasons, including a relatively young and increasingly well-educated population, a rapidly growing ecosystem of AI startups, and lots of potential consumers. However, ambitious efforts to develop AI tools that answer the needs of Africans face numerous hurdles. The biggest are inadequate funding and poor infrastructure. Limited internet access and a scarcity of domestic data centers also mean that developers might not be able to deploy cutting-edge AI capabilities.

'Trump Gaza' AI video intended as political satire, says creator

The Guardian

The creator of the viral "Trump Gaza" AI-generated video depicting the Gaza Strip as a Dubai-style paradise has said it was intended as a political satire of Trump's "megalomaniac idea". The video โ€“ posted by Trump on his Truth Social account last week โ€“ depicts a family emerging from the wreckage of war-torn Gaza into a beachside resort town lined with skyscrapers. Trump is seen sipping cocktails with a topless Benjamin Netanyahu on sun loungers, while Elon Musk tears flatbread into dips. The video first emerged in February, shortly after Trump unveiled his property development plan for Gaza, under which he said he wants to "clean out" the population of about 2 million people to create the "Riviera of the Middle East". Trump then posted the clip without any explanation on his Truth Social platform on 26 February.

The rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) as a novel frontier that uniquely merges advanced levels of intelligence with revolutionary user experiences is redefining the AI landscape for future cellular networks. In particular, the transition towards 6G systems has introduced a myriad of challenges inherent to their AI-native network design, requiring innovative solutions to enable real-time network orchestration, intelligent decision-making, and adaptive dynamic configurations. Meanwhile, the envisioned user experiences for 6G are growing increasingly complex, exceeding the capabilities offered by vintage wireless technologies and conventional AI solutions to satisfy their advanced demands. With its disruptive impact evident across diverse fields, generative AI possesses immense potential to tackle these challenges, leveraging its exceptional capabilities to manage complex tasks, operate autonomously, and adapt seamlessly to scenarios beyond its training domain. Remarkably, generative AI provides a transformative opportunity for telecom and cellular networks to bridge this defined gap in 6G systems, thereby shifting towards a new era with cutting-edge AI innovations across the different system and user levels.

Generalized Interpolating Discrete Diffusion

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

While state-of-the-art language models achieve impressive results through next-token prediction, they have inherent limitations such as the inability to revise already generated tokens. This has prompted exploration of alternative approaches such as discrete diffusion. However, masked diffusion, which has emerged as a popular choice due to its simplicity and effectiveness, reintroduces this inability to revise words. To overcome this, we generalize masked diffusion and derive the theoretical backbone of a family of general interpolating discrete diffusion (GIDD) processes offering greater flexibility in the design of the noising processes. Leveraging a novel diffusion ELBO, we achieve compute-matched state-of-the-art performance in diffusion language modeling. Exploiting GIDD's flexibility, we explore a hybrid approach combining masking and uniform noise, leading to improved sample quality and unlocking the ability for the model to correct its own mistakes, an area where autoregressive models notoriously have struggled. Our code and models are open-source: https://github.com/dvruette/gidd/

Artificial Intelligence in Pronunciation Teaching: Use and Beliefs of Foreign Language Teachers

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Pronunciation instruction in foreign language classrooms has often been an overlooked area of focus. With the widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its potential benefits, investigating how AI is utilized in pronunciation teaching and understanding the beliefs of teachers about this tool is essential for improving learning outcomes. This study aims to examine how AI use for pronunciation instruction varies across different demographic and professional factors among teachers, and how these factors, including AI use, influence the beliefs of teachers about AI. The study involved 117 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in-service teachers working in Cyprus, who completed an online survey designed to assess their beliefs about the effectiveness of AI, its drawbacks, and their willingness to integrate AI into their teaching practices. The results revealed that teachers were significantly more likely to agree on the perceived effectiveness of AI and their willingness to adopt it, compared to their concerns about its use. Furthermore, teachers working in higher education and adult education, as well as those who had received more extensive training, reported using AI more frequently in their teaching. Teachers who utilized AI more often expressed stronger agreement with its effectiveness, while those who had received more training were less likely to express concerns about its integration. Given the limited training that many teachers currently receive, these findings demonstrate the need for tailored training sessions that address the specific needs and concerns of educators, ultimately fostering the adoption of AI in pronunciation instruction.

AI-driven Prediction of Insulin Resistance in Normal Populations: Comparing Models and Criteria

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Insulin resistance (IR) is a key precursor to diabetes and a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Traditional IR assessment methods require multiple blood tests. We developed a simple AI model using only fasting blood glucose to predict IR in non-diabetic populations. Data from the NHANES (1999-2020) and CHARLS (2015) studies were used for model training and validation. Input features included age, gender, height, weight, blood pressure, waist circumference, and fasting blood glucose. The CatBoost algorithm achieved AUC values of 0.8596 (HOMA-IR) and 0.7777 (TyG index) in NHANES, with an external AUC of 0.7442 for TyG. For METS-IR prediction, the model achieved AUC values of 0.9731 (internal) and 0.9591 (external), with RMSE values of 3.2643 (internal) and 3.057 (external). SHAP analysis highlighted waist circumference as a key predictor of IR. This AI model offers a minimally invasive and effective tool for IR prediction, supporting early diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention.

AutoTestForge: A Multidimensional Automated Testing Framework for Natural Language Processing Models

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In recent years, the application of behavioral testing in Natural Language Processing (NLP) model evaluation has experienced a remarkable and substantial growth. However, the existing methods continue to be restricted by the requirements for manual labor and the limited scope of capability assessment. To address these limitations, we introduce AutoTestForge, an automated and multidimensional testing framework for NLP models in this paper. Within AutoTestForge, through the utilization of Large Language Models (LLMs) to automatically generate test templates and instantiate them, manual involvement is significantly reduced. Additionally, a mechanism for the validation of test case labels based on differential testing is implemented which makes use of a multi-model voting system to guarantee the quality of test cases. The framework also extends the test suite across three dimensions, taxonomy, fairness, and robustness, offering a comprehensive evaluation of the capabilities of NLP models. This expansion enables a more in-depth and thorough assessment of the models, providing valuable insights into their strengths and weaknesses. A comprehensive evaluation across sentiment analysis (SA) and semantic textual similarity (STS) tasks demonstrates that AutoTestForge consistently outperforms existing datasets and testing tools, achieving higher error detection rates (an average of $30.89\%$ for SA and $34.58\%$ for STS). Moreover, different generation strategies exhibit stable effectiveness, with error detection rates ranging from $29.03\% - 36.82\%$.
