Shining light on Facebook's AI strategy

#artificialintelligence

In a speech today at Web Summit, Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer laid out a vision for the role artificial intelligence and machine learning will play in the company's ambitions to improve global connectivity, technology accessibility, and human computer interaction. "People want to stay connected and close to other people, so whatever is the best current technology to deploy that is the business we want to be in," said Schroepfer. Large companies like Facebook play an incredibly important role in the artificial intelligence and machine learning ecosystem. Their sheer size and ability to corner the market on talent makes almost every strategic decision they make an industry-wide declaration. Despite setbacks, like the explosion of Facebook's satellite aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 earlier this summer, the company remains steadfast in its goals to better connect the world.

The Transhumanists' Nominee for President

The New Yorker

Zoltan Istvan was in town recently, campaigning as the Presidential nominee of the Transhumanist Party. He was on track to appear on the ballot in zero states. "Politicians keep having the same old arguments about tax policy and Social Security," he said. "Transhumanists want to talk about how science can help us radically transform the human experience, how we can cure death and disease and upload our consciousness into the cloud, things like that." He was on a street corner in SoHo.

Man acquitted after Tinder date fell off balcony faces backlash with TV interview

FOX News

An Australian man acquitted of murder last month after his Tinder date plummeted off a balcony to her death faced new criticism after he acknowledged in a TV interview that the woman had screamed "no" a reported 33 times before she fell. "Yeah, she was certainly trying to make a lot of noise," Gable Tostee commented in the interview, which aired on the Nine Network's "60 Minutes." Critics also lashed out after The Courier Mail claimed Tostee was paid a six-figure sum for the interview. A senior detective called it "disgusting". The detective continued, "There's a lot of anger among police about this. Of course we respect the court's decision to find him not guilty but for him to now do a paid interview after everything this poor girl's family has been through, is horrific."

How We Combined Different Methods to Create Advanced Time Series Prediction

@machinelearnbot

Today, businesses need to be able to predict demand and trends to stay in line with any sudden market changes and economy swings. This is exactly where forecasting tools, powered by Data Science, come into play, enabling organizations to successfully deal with strategic and capacity planning. Smart forecasting techniques can be used to reduce any possible risks and assist in making well-informed decisions. One of our customers, an enterprise from the Middle East, needed to predict their market demand for the upcoming twelve weeks. They required a market forecast to help them set their short-term objectives, such as production strategy, as well as assist in capacity planning and price control.

Tracking the 'Next Big Thing'

#artificialintelligence

On its 250th birthday, November 10, the Rutgers University community statewide will focus on these and many other provocative subjects as it hosts 80 of its alumni, noted for their thought leadership and innovation, for "A Day of Revolutionary Thinking" on the concluding day of activities associated with the university's yearlong celebration of its rich history. The university's special guests – which include a cybersecurity CEO, a biopharmaceutical company founder, a former New Jersey attorney general and an activist-artist – were invited to share their diverse points of view with students and to demonstrate how learning at Rutgers contributed to their successes. In anticipation of their presentations, Rutgers Today invited these innovators to discuss the "Next Big Thing" they envision occurring in their respective fields. Thomas Kennedy, '77, B.S. Electrical and Computer Engineering Given the increase in cybersecurity and the number of everyday items with network connectivity, securing the "internet of things" is imperative, stresses Kennedy, chair and CEO of Raytheon Company, which specializes in defense, civil government and cybersecurity solutions. "This is expanding exponentially with the number of things connected online," he says.

Football Manager's Miles Jacobson On Leicester, Brexit And Building Better Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Just before the launch of Football Manager 2017 [official site], with the beta already released to the many people who preordered the game, I spoke to Sports Interactive director Miles Jacobson about the changes his team have made in this latest game in the series. We talked about AI improvements, Brexit, and whether Leicester winning the Premier League was a happy day or a sad day at Sports Interactive. With updates to the beta arriving regularly as the people playing provided feedback, commentary and complaints, Sports Interactive is a busy place around this time of year. The fortnight before launch day is an enormous playtest, in which more eyes are on the new version of the game than have been at any point during development. Jacobson seems happy to take time away from assessment of new release candidate builds to talk though.

Liberia internet down after huge cyber attack cuts web access for entire country

The Independent - Tech

Liberia has lost access to the entire internet in apparent preparation for shutting down the entire internet. Repeated attacks are flooding the country's network with requests and taking it down entirely. That has intermittently knocked the entire web offline, meaning that people can't access any websites or web services. The attacks appear to be a way for hackers to test a variety of ways of attacking internet connections and taking offline. In that way they resemble the attacks launched recently, when hackers brought down many of the world's biggest websites.

CAN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE HELP REDUCE POVERTY?

#artificialintelligence

The number one goal in United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 is: eliminate poverty. Today, around 1 billion people, that's roughly one seventh of the world's population, live in extreme poverty by earning less than 1.90$ per day. Though studies reveal that global poverty is reducing, we are still a long way from our goal. To eradicate poverty, we first need the poverty distribution across the globe. The following diagram gives a rough estimate.
