Dr Nicole Downs and Dr Katherine Bussey, lecturers in Early Childhood at Deakin University in Australia, maintain that parents should not wait until their kids are teenagers to talk about appropriate touching. Instead, consent should be a'normal, everyday part of life' that teaches babies what is acceptable when it comes to their bodies. Parents should take their children's views into account, according to the pair - even when it comes to dealing with a dreaded nappy disaster.

UN Security Council to vote on Trump peace plan for Gaza

BBC News

The UN Security Council is expected to vote on a draft resolution backing Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza. The text, submitted by the US, would give a mandate for the deployment of an International Stabilization Force (ISF) and to set up transitional governance there. The US says multiple unnamed countries have offered to contribute to the ISF, though it is unclear whether it would be required to ensure Hamas disarms or function as a peacekeeping force. Its formation is a central plank of Trump's 20-point plan which last month brought a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in their two-year war. The draft also raises the possibility of a Palestinian state - something Israel strongly opposes.

What is the chance your plane will be hit by space debris?

MIT Technology Review

What is the chance your plane will be hit by space debris? Explains: Let our writers untangle the complex, messy world of technology to help you understand what's coming next. In mid-October, a mysterious object cracked the windshield of a packed Boeing 737 cruising at 36,000 feet above Utah, forcing the pilots into an emergency landing. The internet was suddenly buzzing with the prospect that the plane had been hit by a piece of space debris. We still don't know exactly what hit the plane--likely a remnant of a weather balloon--but it turns out the speculation online wasn't that far-fetched. That's because while the risk of flights being hit by space junk is still small, it is, in fact, growing.

Review of "Exploring metaphors of AI: visualisations, narratives and perception"

AIHub

From 10th to 12th September 2025, Barcelona hosted an academic gathering at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya: the first Hype Studies Conference, titled "(Don't) Believe the Hype!?" Organised by a transnational, collective research group of scholars and practitioners, the conference drew together researchers, activists, artists, journalists, and technology professionals to examine hype as a significant force shaping contemporary society. Hype Studies is an emerging academic field that analyses how and why excessive expectations form around technologies, ideas, or phenomena, and what effects those expectations have on society, culture, economics, and policy. As the playful brackets around "Don't" in the conference title suggest - both a warning and an invitation to question that warning - the aim of the conference wasn't to simply reject hype, but to understand it. The conference approached hype critically by examining it as a phenomenon with real power and consequences that needs to be understood and questioned. The purpose here was to build collective knowledge about hype, develop better and more concrete theories, share empirical findings, and create an interdisciplinary community whilst advancing the field's scholarship and knowledge.

VoxTell: Free-Text Promptable Universal 3D Medical Image Segmentation

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We introduce VoxTell, a vision-language model for text-prompted volumetric medical image segmentation. It maps free-form descriptions, from single words to full clinical sentences, to 3D masks. Trained on 62K+ CT, MRI, and PET volumes spanning over 1K anatomical and pathological classes, VoxTell uses multi-stage vision-language fusion across decoder layers to align textual and visual features at multiple scales. It achieves state-of-the-art zero-shot performance across modalities on unseen datasets, excelling on familiar concepts while generalizing to related unseen classes. Extensive experiments further demonstrate strong cross-modality transfer, robustness to linguistic variations and clinical language, as well as accurate instance-specific segmentation from real-world text. Code is available at: https://www.github.com/MIC-DKFZ/VoxTell

TEDxTN: A Three-way Speech Translation Corpus for Code-Switched Tunisian Arabic - English

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In this paper, we introduce TEDxTN, the first publicly available Tunisian Arabic to English speech translation dataset. This work is in line with the ongoing effort to mitigate the data scarcity obstacle for a number of Arabic dialects. We collected, segmented, transcribed and translated 108 TEDx talks following our internally developed annotations guidelines. The collected talks represent 25 hours of speech with code-switching that cover speakers with various accents from over 11 different regions of Tunisia. We make the annotation guidelines and corpus publicly available. This will enable the extension of TEDxTN to new talks as they become available. We also report results for strong baseline systems of Speech Recognition and Speech Translation using multiple pre-trained and fine-tuned end-to-end models. This corpus is the first open source and publicly available speech translation corpus of Code-Switching Tunisian dialect. We believe that this is a valuable resource that can motivate and facilitate further research on the natural language processing of Tunisian Dialect.

On the notion of missingness for path attribution explainability methods in medical settings: Guiding the selection of medically meaningful baselines

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The explainability of deep learning models remains a significant challenge, particularly in the medical domain where interpretable outputs are critical for clinical trust and transparency. Path attribution methods such as Integrated Gradients rely on a baseline representing the absence of relevant features ("missingness"). Commonly used baselines, such as all-zero inputs, are often semantically meaningless, especially in medical contexts. While alternative baseline choices have been explored, existing methods lack a principled approach to dynamically select baselines tailored to each input. In this work, we examine the notion of missingness in the medical context, analyze its implications for baseline selection, and introduce a counterfactual-guided approach to address the limitations of conventional baselines. We argue that a generated counterfactual (i.e. clinically "normal" variation of the pathological input) represents a more accurate representation of a meaningful absence of features. We use a Variational Autoencoder in our implementation, though our concept is model-agnostic and can be applied with any suitable counterfactual method. We evaluate our concept on three distinct medical data sets and empirically demonstrate that counterfactual baselines yield more faithful and medically relevant attributions, outperforming standard baseline choices as well as other related methods.
