What does the future of shopping with AI look like?

#artificialintelligence

The retail experience is evolving with artificial intelligence (AI) changing how items can be bought and sold. Inventory robots can automatically restock shelves and sensors can track customer traffic patterns to identify optimum store layout. Opportunities for cross-selling and digital signage can be edited for specific audiences, providing up-to-the-minute information to motivate consumers, such as alerting them to when stocks are running low. Augmented reality (AR) is also enhancing the retail experience. In homeware, a consumer can upload an image of their room and redecorate it using AR to view different colour schemes and choose suitable accessories, suggested by computers.

The graph represents a network of 3,357 Twitter users whose tweets in the requested range contained "smarthome", or who were replied to or mentioned in those tweets. The network was obtained from the NodeXL Graph Server on Saturday, 28 May 2022 at 03:34 UTC. The requested start date was Saturday, 28 May 2022 at 00:01 UTC and the maximum number of days (going backward) was 14. The maximum number of tweets collected was 7,500. The tweets in the network were tweeted over the 10-day, 8-hour, 57-minute period from Tuesday, 17 May 2022 at 09:45 UTC to Friday, 27 May 2022 at 18:42 UTC.

AI Can Predict Potential Nutrient Deficiencies from Space

#artificialintelligence

Micronutrient deficiencies afflict more than two billion people worldwide, including 340 million children. This lack of vitamins and minerals can have serious health consequences. But diagnosing deficiencies early enough for effective treatment requires expensive, time-consuming blood draws and laboratory tests. New research provides a more efficient approach. Computer scientist Elizabeth Bondi and her colleagues at Harvard University used publicly available satellite data and artificial intelligence to reliably pinpoint geographical areas where populations are at high risk of micronutrient deficiencies.

Microsoft to Archive Music on Futuristic Slivers of Glass That Will Live 10,000 Years

#artificialintelligence

But thanks to Microsoft, at least we'll be listening to Stevie Wonder after the apocalypse. The tech giant is partnering with Elire Group to etch the world's music onto glass plates, and bury them in a remote arctic mountainside to ride out the end of the world. The Global Music Vault will share space with the Global Seed Vault (better known as the Doomsday Vault) in Svalbard, Norway. The Doomsday Vault houses the largest collection of agricultural seeds on the planet. The Global Music Vault aims to match its neighbor seed for song.

Mitigating AI Bias, with โ€ฆBias

#artificialintelligence

This article is part of my Data Trust series of talks and writing. The purpose of these articles are to break down complex but important socio-technical topics in a manner that is accessible to both practitioners and non-practitioners. Most tools we use today leverage AI/ML from the moment we wake up and while we sleep. Humans build Machine Learning, and humans are inherently biased. Since humans aren't perfect, we encode our biases into the data we use to train AI.

Coding for the cosmos - Microsoft Garage

#artificialintelligence

Microsoft, NASA, and students from two HBCUs in the Reston/DC area have completed the maiden mission of a new Microsoft/NASA partnership, STEM Educational Project: AI looking for new Earths. Using methodology developed by The Microsoft Garage over years of running hackathons, in just one month โ€“ and while completing their final exams โ€“ the student hackers learned and deployed several new technologies, and quite literally reached the stars by showing they could deploy code to the International Space Station. According to Piali Ghose, Director of The Garage Reston/DC and host of the event, "This hackathon amplifies the cultural priorities closest to our hearts here at Microsoft and at The Garage because it allows us to continue fulfilling our stated commitments to making a difference, seeking diversity and being inclusive in our work, bringing multiple teams together as'One Microsoft' while collaborating with federal and academic partners, and doing all of this with a growth mindset." The partnership emerged from a shared goal of fostering the future STEM workforce by exposing university students to science, tools, and expertise "at the intersection of Space Cloud." By structuring the project as a month-long hackathon, participating students learned how real data scientists work as a team to ideate, develop, and validate their work with a proof of concept.

This week: South Africa fights locusts with AI

#artificialintelligence

I know we're not supposed to engage in animal cruelty, but locusts are doing way to much in South Africa. In this week's edition of TC Weekender, one of the stories we're highlighting explores how South Africa is fighting locusts with artificial intelligence.

Microsoft inadvertently learned the risks of creating racist AI, but what happens if you deliberately point the intelligence at a toxic forum? As Motherboard and The Verge note, YouTuber Yannic Kilcher trained an AI language model using three years of content from 4chan's Politically Incorrect (/pol/) board, a place infamous for its racism and other forms of bigotry. After implementing the model in ten bots, Kilcher set the AI loose on the board -- and it unsurprisingly created a wave of hate. In the space of 24 hours, the bots wrote 15,000 posts that frequently included or interacted with racist content. They represented more than 10 percent of posts on /pol/ that day, Kilcher claimed.

KWASU library to introduce Artificial Intelligence, Robotics - P.M. News

#artificialintelligence

Dr Abdulsalam Salman, the Librarian, Kwara State University (KWASU) Malete, said the library will introduce Artificial Intelligence and Robotics to address the challenges of staff shortage in the Dept. Salman Friday said that the introduction of robots was one of the ways of digitalising the services in the library. "One of my missions is to see how we can fully digitalise the services in the library. "We are trying to introduce Artificial Intelligence and Robotics where we can use robots in providing library services. "Instead of you interfacing with humans, robots will take over, so, the issue of understaffing that we have as a challenge will be taken care of," the librarian said.
