AI Is Moving Beyond Chatbots. Claude Cowork Shows What Comes Next
AI Is Moving Beyond Chatbots. The DNA file had been gathering dust in Pietro Schirano's computer for years. Then, earlier this month, he gave it to Claude Code--an "agentic coding tool" developed by Anthropic--for analysis. "I'm attaching my raw DNA file from Ancestry DNA," he told the tool. The AI spawned copies of itself on Schirano's computer, each one simulating an expert in a different part of the genome--one expert on cardiovascular disease, another on aging, a third on autoimmune disease.

China applies to launch 200,000 satellites into space, sparking concerns they plan to build a 'mega-constellation'
Each of these enormous collections of spacecraft, dubbed CTC-1 and CTC-2, would contain 96,714 satellites spread over 3,660 different orbits. If completed, China's new mega-constellation would dwarf even SpaceX's bold ambition to put 49,000 Starlink satellites in orbit. Together, CTC-1 and CTC-2 would be the largest assembly of satellites ever put in orbit, and would effectively lock competitors out of a region of low-Earth orbit. With Chinese authorities remaining quiet about the satellites' intended use, experts have raised concerns that the constellation may pose a security or defence threat. As reported by China in Space, the Nanjing University of Aeronautics claims that the satellites will focus on: 'Low-altitude electromagnetic space security, integrated security defence systems, electromagnetic space security assessment of airspace, and low-altitude airspace safety supervision services.'

Musk's Grok to bar users from generating sexual images of real people
Musk's Grok to bar users from generating sexual images of real people Elon Musk's X has said it will "geoblock" users of xAI Grok from creating images of people in "bikinis, underwear, and similar attire" amid a global backlash against the chatbot's sexualised images. "We have implemented technological measures to prevent the Grok account from allowing the editing of images of real people in revealing clothing such as bikinis," X's safety team said in a statement late on Wednesday. The statement did not elaborate on the nature of the geoblocking or other safeguards. X claimed to have "zero tolerance for any forms of child sexual exploitation, non-consensual nudity, and unwanted sexual content". X's Grok faces investigations and bans from regulators and governments around the world following a deluge of sexualised AI images on the platform in recent weeks.
ICE agent shoots Minneapolis man in the leg
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer has shot a man in the leg in the US city of Minneapolis, where an ICE agent shot dead a woman last week. In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said federal officers initially pursued the man in a car chase because he was illegally in the US from Venezuela. The City of Minneapolis confirmed a man was shot and taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries. An ICE officer was also taken to hospital to be treated for injuries, the DHS said. Minneapolis city officials said on X: We understand there is anger.
Labubu toy manufacturer exploited workers, labour group claims
A labour rights organisation claims it has found evidence of worker exploitation in a Chinese factory that makes the viral Labubu dolls. China Labor Watch (CLW), a US-based non-governmental organisation, alleges that its investigation found that one of Pop Mart's suppliers made employees work excessive overtime shifts, sign blank or incomplete contracts and did not give them paid leave. The furry Labubu dolls have surged in popularity around the world in recent years and are best known for selling toys in blind boxes, which hide its content from buyers until it is opened. Pop Mart told the BBC that it is investigating the claims. The Beijing-based toy retailer said it appreciated the details from the review and that it will firmly require companies making its toys to correct their practices if the allegations are found to be true.

X to stop Grok AI from undressing images of real people after backlash
Elon Musk's AI model Grok will no longer be able to edit photos of real people to show them in revealing clothing, after widespread concern over sexualised AI deepfakes in countries including the UK and US. We have implemented technological measures to prevent the Grok account from allowing the editing of images of real people in revealing clothing such as bikinis. This restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers, reads an announcement on X, which operates the Grok AI tool. The change was announced hours after California's top prosecutor said the state was probing the spread of sexualised AI deepfakes, including of children, generated by the AI model. The update expands measures that stop all users, including paid subscribers, editing images of real people in revealing outfits.
