A Nyala resident said that the attack took place at around 8pm (18:00 GMT) on Monday at a market in the north of the city - which serves as the de facto capital of Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Another Nyala resident told AFP that the market was frequented by armed men, particularly RSF fighters. The Sudanese military, which has been at war with the RSF since April 2023, regularly strikes Nyala, where the RSF has declared an administration rivalling the military-backed, internationally recognised government in Khartoum.

How Sudan's shift to drone warfare is fuelling a civilian crisis Share How Sudan's shift to drone warfare is fuelling a civilian crisis on social media In the Imtidad Nasser neighbourhood east of Sudan's capital Khartoum, residents are grappling with a terrifying new reality of skies filled with drones. "We heard the buzz of drones in the sky, but did not pay attention to it at first," Ahmed Abdel Hamid, a resident of the area, told Al Jazeera about a recent drone attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Then, anti-aircraft fire and two huge explosions shook the area, killing three children from a family in the community. A devastating wave of drone attacks across Sudan has killed more than 160 people in recent days, marking a lethal evolution in the conflict between competing military forces which began in April 2023. A rise in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary RSF has pushed the war deep into residential neighbourhoods, driven by shifting battlefield motives and a mutual desire to exhaust the opponent.

Drone warfare kills over 1,000 in Sudan in 2026 as strikes multiply: UN

Al Jazeera

More than 1,000 civilians in Sudan have been killed in drone strikes in the first five months of 2026, according to the United Nations. The death toll is due to a "sharp" increase in the use of drone warfare in the country's vicious civil war, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) Volker Turk said in a speech on Monday. On top of documenting more than 1,000 civilians being killed in the first five months of this year, the UN office also reported "rampant" levels of sexual violence, including rape. The war in the African nation started in April 2023 when a rivalry between Sudan's army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan "Hemedti" Dagalo, exploded into war. The conflict, which had first started in the capital Khartoum, soon spread to several areas of the country.

Sudan drone attack on key hospital killed 64 people during Eid, WHO says

BBC News

Sudan's army has denied it carried out a deadly attack on a major hospital on Friday night in a city in the west of the country held by its rivals, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said 64 people - including 13 children, two nurses and a doctor - had died in the strike on el-Daein Teaching Hospital and 89 others had been wounded. Enough blood has been spilled, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus posted on X, urging the warring parties to end the conflict, which started nearly three years ago. The RSF said an army drone had hit the hospital in el-Daein, the capital of East Darfur state, on the day Muslims were marking the festival of Eid. Sudan was plunged into a civil war in April 2023 when a vicious struggle for power broke out between the military and the RSF, who had once been allies after coming to power in a coup in 2021.
