Microsoft boss says future success lies in artificial intelligence

Microsoft will increase its use of artificial intelligence (AI) in order to improve the company's products, chief executive Satya Nadella said when revealing the tech giant's latest financial results. The company behind the Windows PC software reported revenue of 24.1 billion US dollars (£19.1bn) in the three months to December 31, up on the 23.8 billion dollars (£18.9bn) it generated in the same period last year, an increase driven by the firm's cloud-based products, Nadella said. Since taking over as chief executive in 2014, Nadella has shifted Microsoft's focus to its cloud business and software and away from hardware including smartphones. Microsoft said its cloud services around Microsoft Office, including Office 365 which gives customers access to the likes of Word, Excel and PowerPoint anywhere, saw a revenue rise of 47% in the last quarter among business customers, while the number of consumer users also rose to 24.9 million.

Business analytics software provider FusionOps has launched a platform that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to identify opportunities to improve supply chain performance for customers such as manufacturers and enterprise corporations, the company said Tuesday. The new "cognitive applications" product is an extension of Mountain View, Calif.-based FusionOps' existing suite of supply chain solutions, which use database analysis and machine-learning tools to help companies improve their forecasts, control costs, and hone inventory levels. Evernote Said It Will Read Customer Notes to Improve Machine Learning

In a corporate blog post published this week, the company said it's updating the terms of its privacy policy to include a change that lets its employees access user notes to improve its machine-learning technologies. It's unclear if Evernote updated its privacy policy in light of the company's recent decision to move its corporate infrastructure--which includes its customer data--to Google's goog cloud computing service. In September, Evernote chief technology officer Anirbin Kundu told Fortune's Barb Darrow that Google's machine-learning technology services were a big draw to the company selecting Google from other cloud computing companies that he did not name. "Many people put travel itineraries, and we can notify you if your flight is delayed," Kundu said at the time regarding how Evernote planned to use Google's goog machine learning tools.
