"Firms in the vanguard of this trend will engage customers more quickly and squeeze new efficiencies out of processes. Exploiting computing power on the edge will give them an actual edge.

Harman, best known for its consumer audio speakers, derives 65 percent of sales from its automotive business, supplying navigation services, on-board entertainment systems and vehicle networks that put it at the intersection of connected cars and mobile networks. In recent months, Samsung has secured licenses for autonomous driving pilot projects in South Korea and California. Over the next two to three years, the new Samsung Automotive Innovation Fund will invest in a range of connected car areas including sensors, machine vision, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, cloud services, mobile connectivity, automotive-grade safety and security, the company said.

For years many of us have been paying attention to the ways that several technological realities such as the Internet of Things, big data and artificial intelligence (AI) are impacting organizations across numerous industries, applications and areas. When we looked at the several technologies in the SMAC stack (social, mobile, analytics and cloud) or IDC's core 3rd platform technologies we looked at them separately but also in their combinations and interlinked value as they powered new next generation applications. It seemed pretty obvious that cloud services, big data/analytics, mobility (mobile devices, apps and broadband) and social (business) were fully intertwined ever since we started writing about that third platform, which IDC presented back in 2011.
