Music from the heart, with an AI assist

#artificialintelligence

His favorite rappers felt like personal mentors, and he decided to imitate them and try rapping himself. He recorded songs using the microphone on his MP3 player; he says they were a crucial way for him to vent. "From when I was 13 until today, being able to write about my life and how I'm feeling, it's the most therapeutic thing for me," he says. Around the same time he discovered hip-hop, MJ became fascinated by technology. His family couldn't afford a computer, but someone at his local church built a computer for them, complete with a see-through CPU tower.

Should AI assist in surgical decision-making?

#artificialintelligence

There's a push for AI/ML to reduce the staggering number of preventable deaths due to surgical error. The first and second leading causes of death in the United States are heart disease and cancer. The third is now coronavirus. Astoundingly, the answer is preventable medical errors. Surgical errors in particular account for 26% of these deaths and cost somewhere north of $36 billion in the U.S. I did a double take when I read those stats while reporting this story.

Some of the most common laparoscopic procedures, things like colectomies, hysterectomies, and gastrectomies result in an astounding number of preventable deaths.

An AI Assist for Spotting COVID-19 in X Rays

#artificialintelligence

Chest x rays offer a quick screening method for lung problems: A collapsed lung, the buildup of excess fluid, or swollen tissue are all recognizable by radiologists in these black and white images. Doctors also use the images to help quickly diagnosis diseases, such as pneumonia. Making x-ray screening of COVID-19 similarly speedy would benefit over-run hospitals, and the developers of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are hoping that they can help. But getting the data they need from hospitals and ensuring accuracy are challenges that they must first overcome. "In places like New York, where there was this huge explosion of [COVID-19] patients, they're already taking chest x rays alongside viral testing. So why not have a greater immediate impact by building AI [software] to help screen through all those images?" says Alexander Wong, who works on medical image processing problems using AI at the University of Waterloo, Canada.

Can AI Assist in Suicide Prevention?

#artificialintelligence

There is a roughly one-in-five chance an individual will experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime. Moreover mental illness can strike anyone -- even popular celebrities such as Ariana Grande, Michael Phelps, and Lady Gaga have spoken of their struggles. Figures from nonprofit organization Mental Health America show the severe depression rate for US youth increased from 5.9 to 8.2 percent over the last five years. For reasons ranging from non-diagnosis to social stigmas, more than half of the 43 million Americans who suffer from some form of depression have received no treatment for their condition. The numbers provide a sobering glimpse of the shortcomings in mental health care, and some researchers are suggesting AI might be able to address the problem.

Adobe launches AI Assist, weaves it through analytics, clouds ZDNet

#artificialintelligence

Adobe has launched a tool called AI Assist that will weave machine learning throughout its analytics platform with the aim of giving customers the ability to uncover currently unknown insights and understand business context. The effort, which took about three years of development time, is part of an ongoing artificial intelligence theme for Adobe. The company has been working to bring more AI and machine learning into all of its clouds. John Bates, director of product management for Adobe Analytics noted that enterprises are only accessing 1 percent to 3 percent of the data produced and stored. Adobe's aim is to take the grunt work out of data science using AI and machine learning to create intelligent alerts and ultimately prescriptive analytics for businesses.

Robotics and AI Assist in Caring for the Elderly - Nanalyze

As Mick Jagger famously sang, "What a drag it is getting old". Though with a net worth of about $360 million and holding court in the pantheon of rock-n-roll gods, Mick Jagger is probably greying about as well as anyone could at age 74. He certainly will have nothing to worry about when the day comes that he can no longer do the rooster strut; Jagger can afford the best elder care money can buy. Most of us probably won't have the financial means to hire a team of 20-something-year-old nurses in short, black latex skirts to take care of us when we become dirty old men. The best most of us can hope for is not to be locked in a closet and left to stew in our own feces.
