The Metropolitan police commissioner, Cressida Dick, has attacked critics of facial recognition technology for using arguments she has claimed are highly inaccurate and ill-informed. "And I would say it is for the critics to justify to victims of crimes why police shouldn't use tech lawfully and proportionately to catch criminals."

Artificial Intelligence technologies carrying a high-risk of abuse that could potentially lead to an erosion of fundamental rights will be subjected to a series of new requirements, the European Commission announced on Wednesday (19 February). As part of the executive's White paper on AI, a series of'high-risk' technologies have been earmarked for future oversight, including those in'critical sectors' and those deemed to be of'critical use.' Those under the critical sectors remit include healthcare, transport, police, recruitment, and the legal system, while technologies of critical use include such technologies with a risk of death, damage or injury, or with legal ramifications. Artificial Intelligence technologies coming under those two categories will be obliged to abide by strict rules, which could include compliance tests and controls, the Commission said on Wednesday. Sanctions could be imposed should certain technologies fail to meet such requirements.

National guidance is urgently needed to oversee the police's use of data-driven technology amid concerns it could lead to discrimination, a report has said. The study, published by the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) on Sunday, said guidelines were required to ensure the use of data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and computer algorithms developed "legally and ethically". Forces' expanding use of digital technology to tackle crime was in part driven by funding cuts, the report said. Officers are battling against "information overload" as the volume of data around their work grows, while there is also a perceived need to take a "preventative" rather than "reactive" stance to policing. Such pressures have led forces to develop tools to forecast demand in control centres, "triage" investigations according to their "solvability" and to assess the risks posed by known offenders.
