Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is increasingly adopting the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to throw up advanced technological solutions to internal security challenges. The Bengaluru-headquartered company may be known as a radar company, but its embrace of AI technologies is resulting in increasingly smaller but advanced inventions. During a recent interaction at Defexpo 2020 in Lucknow, the company showed DH its new Command Control System (CCS), which can track Persons of Interest (PoI) in public spaces such as airports and railway stations. "The CCS is more than a video monitoring system. Its AI system can determine anomalous behavior, identify persons of interest through their gestures or body language and even gauge their emotional state by scanning their faces," said a BEL officer.
BENGALURU: India has initiated a project to digitally map the country with a resolution of 10 centimetres, using drones and technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and big data, a senior government official said on Monday. The herculean task was taken up by the Survey of India, part of the Department of Science and Technology, a few months ago and is planned to be completed in two years, the department's secretary, Prof Ashutosh Sharma said. "...now we are equipping them (Survey of India) with the latest technologies like drones, Artificial Intelligence, big data analytics, image processing and continuously operated reference system", he told reporters on the sidelines of an event here. Once the project is completed, the data will be available to citizens and to Gram Panchayats and local bodies, empowering them to use it in decision making and planning process. The survey is currently in progress in Karnataka, Haryana, Maharashtra and the Ganga basin.
Bengaluru: A move toward project-based work is prompting Indian information technology (IT) services companies to adopt the flexi or contractual staff model while hiring professionals in high-tech areas, spelling rising costs for companies. According to the latest talent market research by Infosys, called Talent Radar 2019, the top five technical skills in demand in digital projects are: analytics, user experience, automation, IT architecture and artificial intelligence. Companies like Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, Infosys Ltd, Wipro Ltd, HCL Technologies Ltd and Tech Mahindra Ltd have adopted this model in varying degrees. The sector's flexi workforce is expected to grow to 720,000 by 2021 from half a million in 2018, according to ISF. To be sure, the move toward contract hires has been a trend across industries, but it has become more visible in IT of late because of a rise in project-based work.
The Indian government plans to decongest its airports by introducing facial recognition technology next year - a proposal that may once again raise privacy concerns in the South Asian country. India's ministry of civil aviation on Thursday said passengers on domestic flights will be able to choose to use their biometric authentication system and go paperless. "Security will benefit from the ability of the technology to verify the passenger at every checkpoint in a non-intrusive way," ministry secretary Rajiv Nayan Choubey said in a statement. The proposal says passengers would be verified by being photographed at every stage of the check-in process - from entering the airport to proceeding through security and boarding the plane. The India government statement said the biometric technology will be introduced first at Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports by February next year, followed by Kolkata, Varanasi, Pune and Vijayawada by April.
An app to fight fake medicine has helped a team of Indian students from Bengaluru win a special award at the annual Microsoft Imagine Cup world championship held at the tech giant's headquarters in Redmond, US. The awards announced on Wednesday saw Team DrugSafe from Bengaluru's RV College of Engineering win the award under Big Data category. Microsoft Imagine Cup is a technology competition where students from around the globe team up to solve some of the world's biggest problems. Team smartARM from Canada emerged as the world champion of Imagine Cup 2018 with their robotic prosthetic hand that calculates appropriate grip for objects utlilising Microsoft Azure Machine Learning and Computer Vision. As the top winner, Team smartARM got cash prize of $85,000 (roughly Rs.58 lakhs) and an Azure grant worth $50,000 (roughly Rs. 34 lakhs).
Mumbai: At the Puravankara Ltd booth at a property exhibition in Bengaluru last month, two humanoid robots recorded visitor data and their queries, partially replacing usual sales staff at the reception. For the real estate firm, which fielded these robots developed by technology firm Invento Markerspaces Pvt. Ltd, the experience was positive. "Instead of 10 young boys/girls manning the reception, this time we just had three," said Anand Narayanan, chief operating officer, Puravankara. For the Bengaluru-based real estate firm, those humanoids are part of a larger plan to completely'dehumanise" its sales process, build a strong data of potential homebuyers and sell homes completely online by 2020, Narayanan said.

Shivkumar Krishnamurthy, co-founder of Prescience notes that many companies still struggle to figure out how to leverage the power of data analytics due to the complexities involved in it, and the lack of business outcome-driven analytics.
DigiConnectt, an artificial intelligence startup that offers sales analytics and enablement solutions, has raised $125,000 (Rs 83.75 lakh) in seed funding from US-based transport management solutions company Aspire Logistics LLC. The Bengaluru-based firm said it plans to use the fresh capital for advancing its technology, strengthening its product line-up and consolidating its research capabilities. Ltd, the startup aims to help organisations with business intelligence insights and focuses on developing products that enhance sales productivity. DigiConnectt was founded last year by Prrashanth H Nagaraj, who is also the firm's managing director. Nagaraj has previous sales experience across industries such as banking, insurance, manufacturing, IT and digital media.
