Today at Build 2022, Microsoft unveiled Project Volterra, a device powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform that's designed to let developers explore "AI scenarios" via Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Neural Processing Engine (SNPE) for Windows toolkit. The hardware arrives alongside support in Windows for neural processing units (NPUs), or dedicated chips tailored for AI- and machine learning-specific workloads. Dedicated AI chips, which speed up AI processing while reducing the impact on battery, have become common in mobile devices like smartphones. But as apps like AI-powered image upscalers come into wider use, manufacturers have been adding such chips to their laptop lineups. M1 Macs feature Apple's Neural Engine, for instance, and Microsoft's Surface Pro X has the SQ1 (which was co-developed with Qualcomm).

Researchers from the University of Colorado have revealed that men who pose topless on Tinder are seen as less competent and more promiscuous. The first dating app can be traced back to 1995 when Match.com was first launched. The website allowed single people to upload a profile, a picture and chat to people online.

Among the 50 new product and technology announcements at Microsoft's Build 2022 developers conference are several new tools and functionality for Teams and Power Platform developers. Teams is getting a new feature called "Live Share," which will allow apps to go beyond passive screen sharing and enable participants to watch, edit/annotate and create together inside of Teams meetings. Developers can use new extensions in preview for the Teams Client software development kit (SDK) to extend existing Teams apps and create Live Share scenarios in meetings. Live Share in Teams is not the same as Live Share in Visual Studio; the two technologies with the same name are built on top of different technology stacks.

The Handheld Biometric Identification Terminal (V11) is a wireless, five-inch terminal with fingerprint, iris, and face biometric verification. Customers can choose between fingerprint sensors certified for single flat fingers at FAP30, FAP20, or FAP10, from Integrated Biometrics, Suprema, Idemia, Futronic, Aratek and SecuGen, according to the product page. The device also supports scanning of digital identity documents through NFC, MRZ Passport reading, and optical character recognition (OCR). The Multifunction Handheld Terminal (V12) terminal is intended for law enforcement that sports a fingerprint sensor with live finger detection, breathalyzer, and narcotics detector, and can issue tickets.

Earlier this month, DeepMind presented a new "generalist" AI model called Gato. The model can play the video game Atari, caption images, chat, and stack blocks with a real robot arm, the Alphabet-owned AI lab announced. All in all, Gato can do hundreds of different tasks. But while Gato is undeniably fascinating, in the week since its release some researchers have got a bit carried away. One of DeepMind's top researchers and a coauthor of the Gato paper, Nando de Freitas, couldn't contain his excitement.
