Supervised learning is the machine learning task of learning a function that maps an input to an output based on example input-output pairs. (Wikipedia)
On Wednesday the average cost for a gallon of regular gas in Los Angeles reached $6.08, leaping 2.3 cents overnight and breaking a record set earlier this year, according to the latest data from AAA. Los Angeles is not alone in its pain as the cost of gas spikes across the nation. And according to analysts, the switch to a more expensive summer blend for other parts of the country promises the hurt will not stop anytime soon. The average cost for regular gas is more than $4 for nearly every state. According to AAA, the national average is $4.56, but California leads the nation with an average of $6.05.
Experts say a perfect storm of supply-and-demand issues are sending gas prices in Los Angeles soaring again, with the price-per-gallon increasing more than 14 cents in the last 16 days, according to the latest fuel prices tracked by AAA. L.A. fuel prices are again inching toward a $6-a-gallon record set in March. The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the Los Angeles area is currently $5.91, with plenty of stations charging well over that. A year ago the price was $4.16. Overnight, the price jumped 2.2 cents, the highest level it has risen since February.

Jack Campbell made 27 saves and the Toronto Maple Leafs set franchise records for victories and points, beating the New York Islanders 4-2 on Sunday night without NHL goals leader Auston Matthews. William Nylander, Mitch Marner, Pierre Engvall and David Kampf scored to help Toronto improve to 50-20-6 and reach 106 points. "We've got a great group in here," Campbell said after the record-setting win.

William Nylander, Michael Bunting and Ilya Mikheyev each scored twice, Auston Matthews had two assists to reach 101 points and the Toronto Maple Leafs routed the Washington Capitals 7-3 on Thursday night. Ilya Lyubushkin also scored and captain John Tavares had four assists to help the Maple Leafs improve to 48-20-6, a victory shy of the club record set in 2017-18. Matthews -- with 58 goals and 43 assists -- became the third player in Toronto history with 100 or more points.
A multivariate Hawkes process enables self- and cross-excitations through a triggering matrix that behaves like an asymmetrical covariance structure, characterizing pairwise interactions between the event types. Full-rank estimation of all interactions is often infeasible in empirical settings. Models that specialize on a spatiotemporal application alleviate this obstacle by exploiting spatial locality, allowing the dyadic relationships between events to depend only on separation in time and relative distances in real Euclidean space. Here we generalize this framework to any multivariate Hawkes process, and harness it as a vessel for embedding arbitrary event types in a hidden metric space. Specifically, we propose a Hidden Hawkes Geometry (HHG) model to uncover the hidden geometry between event excitations in a multivariate point process. The low dimensionality of the embedding regularizes the structure of the inferred interactions. We develop a number of estimators and validate the model by conducting several experiments. In particular, we investigate regional infectivity dynamics of COVID-19 in an early South Korean record and recent Los Angeles confirmed cases. By additionally performing synthetic experiments on short records as well as explorations into options markets and the Ebola epidemic, we demonstrate that learning the embedding alongside a point process uncovers salient interactions in a broad range of applications.
Geoff Bennett: On March 30, NASA's Mark Vande Hei stepped foot on Earth for the first time in nearly a year. Earlier this week, I talked to the astronaut about his record-setting journey. Geoff Bennett: NASA Astronaut Mark Vande Hei set a new record for the single longest spaceflight by an American, spending 355 days in orbit, and surpassing the record held by retired Astronaut Scott Kelly. When you left for this flight, did you know it would last that long? Mark Vande Hei, Nasa Astronaut: Jeff, I did not know it was ñ it would last that long.
Predictive process monitoring is an exceedingly active field of research. At its core, the fundamental component of predictive monitoring is the abstraction technique it uses to obtain a fixed-length representation of the process component subject to the prediction (often, but not always, process traces). In the earlier approaches, the need for such abstraction was overcome through model-aware techniques, employing process models and replay techniques on partial traces to abstract a flat representation of event sequences. Such process models are mostly automatically discovered from a set of available complete traces, and require perfect fitness on training instances (and, seldomly, also on unseen test instances).

Jonathan Huberdeau set Florida's single-season points record, and the Panthers clinched a playoff berth with a 5-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday. Huberdeau scored his 24th goal to extend his point streak to eight games and raise his season total to 97, one more than teammate Aleksander Barkov's record set in 2019. "He's a tremendous player, and he deserves it the way he's been playing," said Barkov, who had two assists and is second on the Panthers with 72 points.
