Machine learning (ML) is a hot topic when it comes to almost anything related to computing, from analyzing data in the cloud, to self-driving cars recognizing people and things, to detecting defective PCBs or chips. Like artificial intelligence (AI), ML is a very broad subset of AI that's often mischaracterized even by people technical backgrounds. Deep learningis a term that's bandied about these days, but what does it really mean? We will get into more detail about neural networks but first a comment about current ML use. We recently finished up our local Mercer Science and Engineering Fair, which I help manage.

The history of artificial intelligence has been marked by repeated cycles of extreme optimism and promise followed by disillusionment and disappointment. Today's AI systems can perform complicated tasks in a wide range of areas, such as mathematics, games, and photorealistic image generation. But some of the early goals of AI like housekeeper robots and self-driving cars continue to recede as we approach them. Part of the continued cycle of missing these goals is due to incorrect assumptions about AI and natural intelligence, according to Melanie Mitchell, Davis Professor of Complexity at the Santa Fe Institute and author of Artificial Intelligence: A Guide For Thinking Humans.


Why the Launch of Apple's Self-driving cars is Delayed?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the new reason for massive success in the automobile industry. With the advent of the AI operating system, the industry is creating more innovative smart devices and programmes on a regular basis. Apple was motivated to invest in the autonomous driving system and launch it as Apple's self-driving cars. Project Titan was formed in 2014 and still searching for loopholes for seven years before the ultimate launch. The unique feature of Apple's self-driving cars is the power to an expensive investment on autonomous driving machine.


Waymo's leadership shift spotlights self-driving car challenges

Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving car subsidiary, has reshuffled its top executive lineup. John Krafcik, Waymo's CEO since 2015, announced on April 2 that he would be stepping down from his role. Krafcik is being replaced by former COO Tekedra Mawakana and former CTO Dmitri Dolgov and will remain as an advisor to the company. "[With] the fully autonomous Waymo One ride-hailing service open to all in our launch area of Metro Phoenix, and with the fifth generation of the Waymo Driver being prepared for deployment in ride-hailing and goods delivery, it's a wonderful opportunity for me to pass the baton to Tekedra and Dmitri as Waymo's co-CEOs," Krafcik wrote on LinkedIn. The change in leadership could have significant implications for Waymo, which has seen many ups and downs as it develops its driverless car business.

The Foundations of AI Are Riddled With Errors

The current boom in artificial intelligence can be traced back to 2012 and a breakthrough during a competition built around ImageNet, a set of 14 million labeled images. In the competition, a method called deep learning, which involves feeding examples to a giant simulated neural network, proved dramatically better at identifying objects in images than other approaches. That kick-started interest in using AI to solve different problems. But research revealed this week shows that ImageNet and nine other key AI data sets contain many errors. Researchers at MIT compared how an AI algorithm trained on the data interprets an image with the label that was applied to it.

IDSIA has a very broad range of research interests, spanning most of Artificial Intelligence as it is understood today: machine learning, including deep learning/neural networks, control and signal processing, natural language processing, robotics, computer vision, search and optimisation, and more fundamental questions in uncertainty, probability, statistics, causal inference. To give an example, we have a 4-year Data project funded by the National Science Foundation as part of Switzerland's National Research Programme 75 "Big Data". In this project we deal with Gaussian processes, which can be understood as statistical neural networks, which can then provide uncertainty estimates relating to their own predictions – unlike traditional neural nets. This is very important in applications where we are evaluating risks. For example, a self-driving car needs to know whether the car's sensors are reliably warning of a potential accident ahead rather than a a person safely crossing the street.
