Facebook: Here comes the AI of the Metaverse

To operate in augmented and virtual reality, Facebook believes artificial intelligence will need to develop an "egocentric perspective." To that end, the company on Thursday announced Ego4D, a data set of 2,792 hours of first-person video, and a set of benchmark tests for neural nets, designed to encourage the development of AI that is savvier about what it's like to move through virtual worlds from a first-person perspective. The project is a collaboration between Facebook Reality Labs and scholars from 13 research institutions, including academic institutions and research labs. The details are laid out in a paper lead-authored by Facebook's Kristen Grauman, "Ego4D: Around the World in 2.8K Hours of Egocentric Video." Grauman is a scientist with the company's Facebook AI Research unit.

Facebook's 3D Photos feature now simulates depth for any image

In late 2018, Facebook launched 3D Photos, a feature that leverages depth data to create images that look flat but that can be examined from different angles using virtual reality (VR) headsets, through Facebook on the web or Facebook's mobile apps. It initially required a depth map file on desktop or dual-camera phones like the Galaxy Note10 or iPhone 11, but starting today, 3D Photos is compatible with any modern handset with a single camera -- specifically an iPhone 7 or higher or a midrange or better Android device. Facebook says that "state-of-the-art" machine learning techniques made the expanded phone support possible. Newly deployed AI models can infer the 3D structure of images without depth data, regardless of the images' ages or origins. It even works with selfies, paintings, and complex scenes.


Facebook's DeepFovea AI promises power-efficient VR foveated rendering

Foveated rendering addresses a growing challenge for VR headsets, rendering sharp details for your eye's visual sweet spot -- the fovea -- and a simpler, blurrier version for your peripheral vision. Now engineers at Facebook Reality Labs have come up with DeepFovea, an AI-assisted alternative that creates "plausible peripheral video" rather than actually rendering accurate peripheral imagery. The new process is known as "foveated reconstruction," and Facebook says it achieves more than 14 times compression on RGB video with no significant degradation in user-perceived quality. When capturing a video stream, DeepFovea samples only 10% of the pixels in each video frame, focusing largely but not exclusively on the area where the user's eye is focused, represented by the lizard head above. By comparison, the peripheral area is sampled only by scattered dots that become less dense further from the eye's focus area.
