In January, what had previously only been pixels made a real-world splash on the catwalks of Paris Fashion Week. The models' futuristic-looking clothes, designed in a collaboration between fashion house Acne Studios and artist and programmer Robbie Barrat, were designed by an artificial intelligence (AI). 'When you design a collection, you have an idea of what a jacket looks like, or a pair of trousers,' says Jonny Johansson, creative director of Acne Studios. 'The computer doesn't know what a jacket is. It tries to learn from the images we gave it, and then creates its own idea.

Fashion Conversation Data on Instagram

The fashion industry is establishing its presence on a number of visual-centric social media like Instagram. This creates an interesting clash as fashion brands that have traditionally practiced highly creative and editorialized image marketing now have to engage with people on the platform that epitomizes impromptu, realtime conversation. What kinds of fashion images do brands and individuals share and what are the types of visual features that attract likes and comments? In this research, we take both quantitative and qualitative approaches to answer these questions. We analyze visual features of fashion posts first via manual tagging and then via training on convolutional neural networks. The classified images were examined across four types of fashion brands: mega couture, small couture, designers, and high street. We find that while product-only images make up the majority of fashion conversation in terms of volume, body snaps and face images that portray fashion items more naturally tend to receive a larger number of likes and comments by the audience. Our findings bring insights into building an automated tool for classifying or generating influential fashion information. We make our novel dataset of {24,752} labeled images on fashion conversations, containing visual and textual cues, available for the research community.


Not Your Father's AI: Artificial Intelligence Hits the Catwalk at NYFW 2017

This is exactly what Qzone, one of China's largest online social network platforms owned by Tencent, YouTu Lab, an AI research lab under Tencent focusing on machine learning, and Vipshop Holdings Limited, China's leading online discount retailer for brands, have joined hands to accomplish. The three platforms have produced a new AI powered report that reveals the fashion preferences of China's "post-95" generation in terms of most popular colors, fabrics and patterns and inspired a new collection by famous Chinese designer Chi Zhang, named Designer of the year by Esquire China, to be launched at New York Fashion Week 2017. This is the first time that AI technology has been leveraged to identify fashion trends to guide the design of a major new collection for presentation at New York Fashion Week. By applying facial recognition technology to big data aggregated on Tencent's Qzone platform, YouTu Lab's algorithm identified the ages of "post-95" users accurately within three years. In order to analyze fashion preferences, the AI-powered technology was able to distinguish users' clothing from a multitude of varied backgrounds with 95% accuracy.
