The Evolution of Data Catalogs: The Data Discovery Platform

#artificialintelligence

As someone who has spent 13 years in the weeds of data, I witnessed the rise of the "data-driven" trend first hand. Before starting and selling my first data startup, I spent time as a statistical analyst building sales forecasting models in R, a software engineer creating data transformation jobs, and a product manager running A/B tests and analyzing user behaviors. What all these roles had in common was that they gave me an understanding that the context of data -- what it represents, how it was generated, when it was updated last, and the ways it could be joined with other datasets -- is essential to maximizing the data's potential and driving successful outcomes. However, accessing and understanding the context of data is quite difficult. This is because the context of data is often tribal knowledge, meaning it lives only in the brains of the engineers or analysts who have worked with it recently.

What is Azure Synapse and how is it different from Azure Data Bricks?

#artificialintelligence

Azure Synapse Analytics is an unlimited information analysis service aimed at large companies that was presented as the evolution of Azure SQL Data Warehouse (SQL DW), bringing together business data storage and macro or Big Data analysis. Synapse provides a single service for all workloads when processing, managing and serving data for immediate business intelligence and data prediction needs. The latter is made possible by its integration with Power BI and Azure Machine Learning, due to Synapse's ability to integrate mathematical machine learning models using the ONNX format. It provides the freedom to handle and query huge amounts of information either on demand serverless (a type of deployment that automatically scales power on demand when large amounts of data are available) for data exploration and ad hoc analysis, or with provisioned resources, at scale. As one of the few Microsoft's Power BI partners in Spain, at Bismart we have a large experience working with both Power BI and Azure Synapse.

Mitigating Emerging Cyber Security Threats Using Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Last week, I taught a cybersecurity course at the University of Oxford case. I felt that this is significant because typically the problem domain of AI and cybersecurity is mostly an Anomaly detection or a Signature detection problem. Also, most of the times, cybersecurity professionals use specific tools such as splunk or darktrace(which we cover in our course) – but these threats and their mitigations are very new. Hence, they need exploring from first principles/research. Thus, we can cover newer threats such as adversarial attacks(making modifications to input data to force machine-learning algorithms to behave in ways they're not supposed to).

Greatest Female AI Influencers in the Data Science World in 2021

#artificialintelligence

Data science has proven to be successful in addressing a wide range of real-world issues, and it is increasingly being used across industries to enable more intelligent and well-informed decision-making. There is a need for intelligent machines that can understand human actions and job habits as the use of computers for day-to-day business and personal operations expands. This pushes big data analytics and data science to the foreground. Women have made enormous advances in AI research in recent years. In this article, Analytics Insight presents you the list of Greatest Female AI Influencers in the Data Science World in 2021.

9 questions to ask when auditing your AI systems

#artificialintelligence

IT audits for systems of record data are an annual event at most companies. But auditing artificial intelligence and big data, while ensuring that they are under sufficient security and governance, is still a work in progress. The good news is that companies already have a number of practices that they can apply to AI and big data. These practices are embodied in IT policies and procedures that can be adapted for both AI and big data. All are extremely helpful at a time when professional audit firms offer limited AI and big data services.

Competing and Leading in the AI Race: What is Fuelling it?

#artificialintelligence

In today's world, technology leads business and these are not just any tech but specifically AI and other disruptive systems. We have witnessed how the pandemic accelerated the rapid growth and adoption of these cutting-edge technologies. According to Reportlinker research, the global AI market is projected to grow by USD 76.44 billion during 2021-2025, at a CAGR of 21%. Artificial intelligence has revolutionized businesses and industries by introducing automation and intelligent business operations. Many giant firms are leading the AI race and competing consistently to enhance their markets.

Beyond digital transformations: Modernizing core technology for the AI bank of the future

#artificialintelligence

An artificial-intelligence (AI) bank leapfrogs the competition by organizing talent, technology, and ways of working around an AI-first vision for empowering customers with intelligent value propositions delivered through compelling journeys and experiences. Making this vision a reality requires capabilities in four areas: an engagement layer, decisioning layer, core technology layer, and platform operating model. This article was a collaborative effort by Sven Blumberg, Rich Isenberg, Dave Kerr, Milan Mitra, and Renny Thomas. Previous articles in this series have explored the first two areas. The current article identifies capabilities needed in the third area, the core technology and data infrastructure of the modern capability stack. Deploying AI capabilities across the organization requires a scalable, resilient, and adaptable set of core-technology components. When implemented successfully, this foundational layer can enable a bank to accelerate technology innovations, improve the quality and reliability of operations, reduce operating costs, and strengthen customer engagement.

What Serverless Computing Is and Should Become

Communications of the ACM

Let us examine an illustrative example from big data processing. Consider a simple query that might arise in an ecommerce setting: computing an average over 10 billion records using weights derived from one million categories. This workload has the potential for a lot of parallelism, so it benefits from the serverless illusion of infinite resources. We present two application-specific serverless offerings that cater to this example and illustrate how the category affords multiple approaches. One could use the AWS Athena big data query engine, a tool programmed using SQL (Structured Query Language), to execute queries against data in object storage.

Role of artificial intelligence in boosting organizations' cybersecurity

#artificialintelligence

Cybersecurity has become an important strategic imperative and enterprises today need to monitor and defend their IT assets from the ever-changing cyber threat landscape. All modern enterprises need a robust and comprehensive cybersecurity program to prevent, detect, assess, and respond to cybersecurity threats and breaches. In many ways, cybersecurity is unique – much of detection and monitoring is all about correlation and prediction--and can benefit from the infusion of artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions for assessment, analytics, and automation. In a hyper-connected digital world, organizations need to process humongous quantities of data originating from disparate systems to detect anomalies, locate vulnerabilities, and pre-empt threats. Unlike most manual tracking methods, AI and ML-based systems can monitor millions of events on a daily basis and facilitate timely threat detection as well as appropriate and quick response.
